I am astonished nobody remembered to post that old favorite that is a killer for text-to-speech engines. not to mention stenographers (and do those even exist outside of courtrooms anymore?)
Though the tough cough and hiccough plough him through. |

That sentence wouldn't faze a court stenographer in the least, because a stenograph machine records the sound of words, not their spelling. A stenographer simply records what he or she hears; they don't stop to think about the spelling of the words. A stenograph machine only has 22 keys, and they're pressed in different combinations (called "chords") to record different sounds. Every sound can be recorded, so a stenographer needs a good ear, not the ability to spell.

Yes. I'm curious now what the 22 different keys are, and what the machine looks like!
edit: Looks like you have to KNOW what the keys are for! At least two different auctions showed machines with no markings on the keys. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steno-Writer...3D201662492361 Here's a BAG, which may (or may not) have actual letterings on the keys shown: http://www.zazzle.com/court_reportin...00355744518813 Last edited by badgoodDeb; 09-06-2016 at 04:35 PM. |
