No unwanted reboots so far, though. Well, it reboots if you stop or kill nickel.

I'll be disappointed if old devices are just left with no update but I'm hopeful for what davidfor said - that a version of this firmware might be pushed to older devices at a later date.

I'm still on whatever firmware was released in December.

Edit: So if you exit nickel to KSM or koreader it do a reboot?

Yes, sickel is back. They increased the timeout (1 minute I think) and improved the detection. During the beta the only sickel triggered reboots I saw were valid. Once they were reported, the offending code was fixed.

Well, for what it's worth, I just installed this on my Glo HD using a spare SD card and it seems to work fine. KSM 8 works well too, and I can switch back and forth between koreader and nickel at will. Using the .png to exit nickel does as expected (rather than sickel forcing a reboot). I tried some of the patches from the developer thread, and the ones I enabled seem to work fine (as far as I can tell, anyways; at least the thing booted up correctly).

So as an experiment, this firmware seems to work fine enough for me and I might just keep it on to continue playing around with it; it's just a matter of waiting for more patches to be migrated to it, and/or the official 4.0 Glo HD firmware that I assume will come out later this month.

So now the question is, is this safe to install on other devices besides the Aura One?

You're probably safe on Mark 6 hardware. Anything else is a toss up. I'd probably just wait a bit; there will most likely be a general release in the next week or two, if not by the end of the month.

The desktop update has arrived. Generally, it arrives shortly before the firmware releases.

Admittedly, this time we seem to have two desktop app releases (4.0.4326 and 4.0.5579).

But since it was required for 4.0 compatibility on the new devices, it's release doesn't tell us much this time (the firmware that requires it was "pre-released" ).

And I'm putting my money on a 4.1 version for the other devices some time next month.

I needed to change the driver to use a different Python SQLite library that does support this journal mode. This was released in calibre 2.63.0.

What this means is that you cannot use a version of calibre before 2.63.0 on Windows with this firmware. You will also need the latest versions of the Kobo Utilities plugin and KoboTouchExtended driver if you use them.
As I am a luddite I am still using Win XP (yes, yes I know) and V2.0 of Calibre. All I am doing is using it to send books to the device and using the plugin to change a cover here and there, oh and make 'series' titles.

Am I out of luck here? will I have to use Calibre and then manually copy the books over?

Thanks,

At this point, you are out of luck. I'd have to port pretty much the whole driver to get it working on 1.48. What I would suggest is disabling the driver. Then use the "folder" device to connect to it. That will allow you to use calibre to send books to the device and see any sideloaded books on it. It won't have the extra's such as series info, collections and the covers.

If you are daring, you could change the journal mode on the database. You need to use an SQLite manager application or issue the appropriate command to do this. I did do this on one of my devices as an experiment, and it did work. I can't promise it will work perfectly, but I didn't have any problems.
