My son just bought the N647 and was instantly attacked by this poor update. I am pretty inexperienced with this stuff but if anyone has a link to some instructions repair the image it would be appreciated.

Thank heaven I found this thread. I'm another victim of what I just read here is a bad firmware update. My Kobo N647 is showing all the symptoms described in this thread: the weird repeated notification that it's "updating your eReader software," an empty list of book titles. Now after a factory reset (which I did before discovering this forum) Windows Explorer claims that the Kobo root folder is empty, although I can still navigate the Kobo's menu and settings. The Kobo Desktop (which I was forced to update to the latest version, wouldn't let me proceed otherwise) tells me to connect the Kobo via the USB cable, but then nothing more happens for hours on end.

Please send me the image for the N647 model, thank you very much!

I'll look around the thread for instructions as to how to apply the image.

Thanks a million to @flyboy320! And on top of everything, now instead of a 2GB SD card in the Kobo, I have a 16GB card installed. Wonder how many thousand books that'll take? <grin>

I followed the procedure and it really works. Just as a precaution, after opening the case and exchanging SD cards, I waited to put the case back on until the Kobo was reset and re-registered.

After resynching the device to the Kobo Desktop application, there was a white-knuckle moment when it again displayed that notice about upgrading the e-reader's software, but everything seems to have come out fine this time. Whew!

Just joined the forum and found this thread when searching for solutions to problems that have started with my reader. I have a Kobo Wifi N647B with a similar problem. Whilst I can see books that came with it and ones that were loaded on some time ago, anything I upload to it now does not show up as being available. They are there and can be seen and opened from Calibre and from Windows. Does anyone think it would be worth re-installing from an image?
The second problem is occurs when I use an SD card, uploaded abook onto a card to test if the reader would see it from there, it does and I can open it. But then it randomly informs me that I have removed the SD card when I haven't and the book disappears. Take the card out and replace, hey presto it's back until the reader decides otherwise. Have tried a couple of different cards, same result.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I think your best bet is to re-flash the image onto the SD card....PM sent.
