Maybe Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck might fit what you want.

Read this for a local book club. Don't know why I did not record that for my Goodreads account. I wanted so much to get breakfast at that cafe opened by the lesbian couple, but by the time I read the book it was no more.

Now I know why. I read a different book by Heat-Moon. PrairyErth (The Travel Trilogy #2)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/163868.PrairyErth

Would still rate as a road trip book. This includes that cafe.

There's always Jon's favorite book! Much of that is a road trip.

Either the Hobbit or something from the Star Wars canon? I know, everything else is cr@p.

Two that I've seen recommended already, and completely agree with:

Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6563093-endurance

Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...s_with_Charley

Endurance is an all time favourite, one of the most compelling and harrowing adventures and a lesson to all of us on managing a team in difficult situations.

Travels with Charley is one I read years and years ago but is on my re-read list right now.

Both are classics, both are, IMO, timeless.

You mean Jon's favourite place to start a series? Yeh, I'd call that a road-trip. But, apparently the author didn't think much of the book, so recommended you start elsewhere. Maybe one of the other books is road-trip, and that would be the place to start.

All the Rincewind-novels could be called road trips in the broadest sense, what with the poor guy always being on the run. So let's put The Last Continent on the list, whose Mad Max parody alone is worth the price of admission. (Plus, it contains one of my favourite place names in literature, Dijabringabeeralong.)

This list includes some expected books but some other titles that might be off the beaten path, so to speak. More are listed in a thread I created in July 2015, in the BN NOOK Forums, titled: "Some notable books regarding road trips in the USA, for better and for worse".

Fiction - Classics, Historical Fiction, & Sci-Fi/Fantasy:
Fiction - Dystopia, Horror:
Non-fiction - flights to freedom:
Non-fiction - treks that ended in tragedy:
Other non-fiction:
Poetry about pilgrimages

Ditto, and ditto.

I read both of these decades ago and they still stand out as great reads!

Deliver Her: a Novel by Patricia Perry Donovan is about a road trip gone awry; mostly happy ending.
Into the Wild is a good book, totally road trip, though it is tragic.

Thanks everyone for the breadth of suggestions. When I first posted, I was thinking fiction, as that is where the bulk of my reading tends, but there are some compelling non-fiction in there too.

I'm going to finish my current read, then do some sifting through the pack. I'll report back my final choice, just for completeness sake.

I never read the book or saw the film adaptation, but vividly recall someone's calling the latter A Passage to Boredom.
