Yes, I see I managed to miss a bit there, on the reason we don't currently have an ASKO in the new house (which is what the LG replace). The ASKO had a "short" on its "control board", and, of course, replacement of that control board was going to cost AUS$600 just for the part. We'd already spent $400 replacing a facia for it while we were renting out the house, and so we got the irrits and decided to buy a new dishwasher altogether. However, our previous ASKOs (including, or especially, the early 80's one we inherited in a bought house), had been fantastic.

Oh, Fisher & Paykel dishwashers - every one I've used has worked okay, except for that little thing about getting food of things put in it. The washing machine was king though. Our oven is crap (and Fisher & Paykel won't answer my emails even when their system confirms they've received them), and it'll be replaced shortly.

I bought The Loved One the food processor for his birthday. It seems a nice bit of kit, and looks gorgie in red.

Sounds like the problems we have with our ASKOs.

And I've been dying to have the mixer in pink, but I'm afraid it clashes with my kitchen. But it is soooo pretty....
What does The Loved One make in the food processor? Because if you say hummus or pesto I'm hopping on a plane.

I have that same model in white. I love it. I used to hate making cookies because stirring hurt my wrist. Having this mixer made it fun again.

The most frequently-made items are corn-fritters and avacado salsa, usually both made on a Sunday to eat on the balcony for brunch (with toasted pide and crispy bacon and, in my case, woosie sauce and tabasco).

Now, now, I'd never call you "-fashioned".

You've reminded me though. Mum keeps pushing us (me and my three siblings and our partners) for a "list" of things we want when she dies. Aside from my request for the house and her bank account, and for her innate mad skilz at passive-aggressiveness (see request for list), I actually would like her "old-fashioned" Mixmaster. That would be nice, and have "meaning". Thanks, RSE.

Cheers,
Marc

Oh my ... well this post went further than I thought it would. But, if you all don't mind, part II of "I hate it when things like this happen" ....

It is going to be in the mid 20s tonight, and I ran out of propane about two hours ago. So .... we will be getting through the night sans heat.

What fun, you say?? Not so much, really. I will likely head into the upstairs bedroom for the night. Heat rises, or so I've been told, and I'm hoping that that room will stay warmer longer. If it doesn't .... there's always plan B:

The hot water heater is electric, so if push comes to shove, I'm going to curl up in the steam "room" (after making sure it's set no higher than 90 degrees F or so .... I'm not completely mad), take a sleeping pill and just zone out sitting on the bench in there. At the worst, I'll wake up pruney and wrinkley, and it's not like I can drown in a steam room ... catch a case of mildew, maybe, but not drown (and with the temp under 100 there is no danger of heat stroke .... crap it's cold in here right now.

This has been such an interesting day. Interesting as in Chinese curse, interesting.

Shutting down. Talk to you all tomorrow. KitchenAid still sucks, but I'm probably going to get that dishwasher anyway (although the idea I saw below about making my own insert does sound interesting). Apparently lots of companies suck, so I guess it's not news.

I could have sworn that I saw the propane company out here just a week or so ago. I hope it's not a problem with the line .... erk, and double erk. (Can't feel my farking feet!!! .... brrrrrrrr)

And where exactly in Texas are you trapped, dear? I keep being told, since moving to the Frozen North, that "Oh, you must be freezing your cute little butt off up here, since it doesn't get that cold in Texas...."

Me and you both know that's a heavier load of manure than you'll find in most Texas feedlots, but .... how do you explain it to the Northerners?

If I may interject a comment, it normal doesn't get as cold as the midwest. Sub zero is not common here. Also, it doesn't stay cold. For example, in DFW we had an ice storm the previous night with low in the mid 20's (F) (-4 C), but by Saturday, the highs are predicted to be in the low 70's (F) (22 C).

We bought an LG recently, and I hate the mongrel-bastiche thing - the "adjustable plate racks" on the bottom always "adjust" flat whenever you try to put bowls in them, the wine glass bit up the top holds wine glasses, as long as you're willing to give up an extra row where you'd like to put glasses, the wine glass stem holder must be down even when not being used (unlike the "delicate cutlery" rack on the other side) else the dishwasher won't close, which rules out tall glasses along that side, its plate-holder up top is set so that putting large items up there is an exercise in puzzled Rubikscubism, and if you load it up with plates on the bottom, you have to be quick and firm wheeling the bottom rack back in over the "canyon" between the door and the dishwasher proper otherwise the wheels drop into the abyss, it all tilts up, and the bottom rack's pouring its contents into the dishwasher). Other than that though, it works.

I haven't seen it get quite as cold here as it does in the Northern plains .... in fact, I would say the coldest I have personally seen here is about 15 degrees F with a wind chill taking it down to about 5 below zero.

However, even that can be nasty when you have no heat.

I'm in the Hill Country part of Texas. Outside (about an hour drive from) Austin.

The temperature seems to bounce around extremes here. One night it will be 80 degrees at midnight, and the next morning it's 20 and snowing. One lady told me that she had just given up on her garden because she didn't have the time to keep running out and covering up her plants every time the weatherman announced another hard freeze.

I doubt that last night would have been so bad, however, because the weather has been hot-cold-hot-cold, I didn't bring any wood in this year for the fireplace in the great room. I didn't want to trudge out last night (too cold, and too many lions) to get wood, so no fire. The other fireplace burns propane .... that's how I knew the propane had run out .... one minute nice fire ... the next blip ... nothing.

I think, just for the heck of it, after I call the propane guys today, I'm going to make up the fire and bring in the firescreen. I'm also going to hunt down my down booties and other gear so I've got that handy.

I did end up doing a long stint in the steam room last night, then put on a few layers of clothing and jumped into bed with as much bedding as I could find piled on top. I'm sure I looked like a load of wash, but I was warm.
