And now I'm reading the much-talked about Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu. I'm about 2/3rds through. Interesting, but I'm not sure I'll want to read any more of his stuff. But perhaps the last 1/3rd will impress. |

I am syncing between the Kindle of To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis and the audible audio of said book. It is fun but I am not as enthralled by it as I was by Ink and Bone and Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine. I do want to re-read Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome now.

I just finished reading The Last Queen of England by Steve Robinson. It's #3 in his mystery/suspense/intrigue series starring Jefferson Tayte, a professional genealogist. I have found this series to be quite delightful, and the fact that I can borrow them from Kindle Unlimited means that I get to enjoy them without spending any additional money.

I'm reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Someone on the forum said it was better than Gone Girl, which I quite enjoyed. I'm not sure about that, though I'll withhold judgement until I've finished (about half way through).

What does keep me from strongly liking her books is that Flynn is a master at writing unlikeable characters, including the main protagonists. I find the main character in Dark Places very unsympathetic, and at times I wonder why I'm bothering to keep going with the story. The hope of final redemption, maybe? |

I've ditched Criminal Crumbs, I'm re reading Death of A Trophy Wife by Laura Levine, and reading The Bronze Horseman, by Paullina Simons. The latter is going quite slowly. It's a romance, hence my lack of enjoyment, but it's supposed to be a masterpiece of the genre, so I'll keep slogging through it until something snaps in me.

Finished "Friday the Rabbi Slept Late", by Harry Kemelman. This is the first book in the "Rabbi Small" series of detective stories. Rabbi David Small is a scholarly young man who is finding it difficult to fit into the Jewish community of the small town of Barnard's Crossing. He would prefer to spend his days in study and theological debate, but his congregation expect a social secretary for their community. An opportunity to use his skills for logical deduction and solve a mystery arises when a young woman is found dead in the Rabbi's own car. Excellent, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Finished Fix, which was enjoyable. Now about a third of my way through Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

First thing: Best title evar! Second thing: very rich prose, downright poetic without stooping to rhyme or excessive alliteration. Third: this book has obviously influenced many a writer of books and script (and I have probably seen a movie or three that was a treatment of this story) and so I have to work a little to flush that detritus out of my mind and appreciate this book in and of itself. |
