Microsoft’s Anniversary update causes ‘blue screen of death’ and forced reboot when e-readers are connected, users report

Dozens of Microsoft Windows 10 users are reporting that their computers crash when plugging in Amazon Kindles.

The issue appears to be caused by the recent Windows 10 Anniversary update. Users of Amazon’s Paperwhite and Voyage attempting to either transfer books or charge their devices via USB are seeing their various Windows 10 laptops and desktops locking up and requiring rebooting.

Pooka, a user of troubleshooting forum Ten Forums said: “I’ve had a Kindle paperwhite for a few years no and never had an issue with connecting it via USB. However, after the recent Windows 10 updates, my computer BSOD’s [blue screen of death] and force restarts almost as soon as I plug my Kindle in.”

Coincidence? Since the patch that fixed the Kobo problems, now the Kindles have problems?

I just plugged my Voyage into my laptop which has the latest Windows 10 updates as of yesterday and sure enough, Windows crashed. I have an older laptop I can use but this is one I hope they fix in the near future because it's going to be a pain.

Thanks. This computer....my desktop is still on the older version I guess....I use it all the time with my kindles.....If it is not just a driver issue (reloading the drivers) as was mentioned in the other thread....you're right it's gonna be a real pain!

What does it mean to "crash" Windows nowadays? Not BSOD, surely? explorer.exe restarts?

I'm still on win7. Too lazy to upgrade. I missed the free upgrade window, anyway.

I was able to get around this problem by booting the PC with the Kindle already connected. It connected normally and there have been no crashes on subsequent connections, even after the OS is already booted, since then.

I just found a discussion of this on Microsoft's Windows forum. They suggest putting the computer to sleep, connecting the Kindle and then waking it up. It worked for me. It's easier than rebooting, at least.

I had the same problem. I read on some forum that people got it to work by connecting the Kindle with the sleep cover closed, I tried and it does work, so if you own a cover I suggest you try this until Amazon (or Microsoft) fix this problem.

Re this thread's title, you guys are silly for thinking Amazon would do something this risky to take over the world. It obviously signals that their takeover is complete and they no longer have to weigh the risks.

In this case it actually does mean a BSOD. Apparently the Win10 BSOD includes a frowny face on it, but it's still blue.

I think this is actually part of Microsoft's plan to take over the world, not Amazon's. Somehow getting everyone to use Windows 10, then not testing updates enough is the path to world domination. I admit to not seeing how this will work, but then again I'm not a CEO so maybe I just don't think the right way.
