Important Kindle Security update.

Hi,
I received the following notification on my Kindle Keyboard 3G this evening.

We noticed you're using an older version of software on this Kindle e-reader. There is an update available, which will ensure that your e-reader has the security upgrades. Please update to limit any disruption of Kindle services.
It then proceeded to tell me to connect to Wi-Fi and leave it on overnight in order to complete the update. I'm a little anxious about doing this and wonder is it absolutely necessary for me to download the update at all. I'm afraid of losing all my books if something goes wrong.
Has anyone else with the Kindle Keyboard 3G device received a similar message from Amazon?

Mystery solved. You should have gotten a notice in March.
Good to see they are still doing a few over wifi.

Did you get the same notification Cinisajoy? Was it problem free? Should I go ahead and download? I'm not very tech savvy if it goes pear shaped.

I updated mine back in March so yes it is safe but that is up to you. Do you still get books over wifi for the KK?

The latest version is still 3.4.2 which was the March update.

You can download and install the update via USB, it is quite easy.
Thousands or millions of people have done it already

so you should be fine -- it is fairly bulletproof.

Do you really need the update, you ask? Well, you tell me -- do you ever connect the Kindle to Wifi/3G and buy or download books from the Kindle Store? If so, you will need the update...

Yes. I was downloading books this evening when I received the notification.

It is really a very simple and straightforward procedure...

and there are a lot of very helpful people here in the (very unlikely) event you should strike trouble.

Does anyone know - if you have your kindle (PW2) hacked to take custom wallpapers, will this update break that?

It shouldn't but you will probably have to reinstall the hotfix and any hacks you have on it. The jailbreak should survive.
Although you will not have the same update as Maggie since she was asking about a much older kindle.
