That means it would probably be easier to make the light even across the screen. But, extra LEDs are needed to keep the light even along the long side of the screen.

And as they made the widest part of the bezel on the side, is is probably easier to fit them there. Plus this is also the thickest part of the bezel, so again easier to fit.

But, I think the real reason is it makes it easier for flipping the screen over. If they were at the bottom, when the screen was rotated, the lights would be at the top. From comments here, I think the lights at the top would be more visible when reading. Having them on the side means they will be equally visible, or invisible, whichever way the device is help.
Makes sense, but regardless of reason, this has the effect of making the color gradient go from side to side instead of top to bottom like on the Voyage. I think this makes the Oasis worse if you find the color gradient noticeable and bothersome. (I do, a little bit.)

Did I read it right, it'll be available in U.S. Best Buy? That's a new development.

I think it's in CA Best Buys, not US Best Buys. To the best of my knowledge Kobo's are still offered and displayed in Best Buy CA.

I made the same search using "Kindle Voyage" and not "Kindle Voyager" (which doesn't exist) and the green line is clearly different

I hadn't thought of that and I think it would bug me more as well. But, Amazon tells us this was done to improve the light, so, it will be perfect, there won't be any colour gradient and it's just our imagination causing problems.

And no, I couldn't type that with a straight face.

Given that the Aura One is lighter than the Aura HD though ~10mm (~.4") wider, I wouldn't write off one handed reading until I'd tried holding one.

Why not? The Aura One is supposed to withstand submersion though bouncing off the hard surfaces of the bath tub might not be good for it. The case might also need replacement after prolonged submersion.
