Maybe JSWolf's comment is a slightly oblique way of describing one of the KA1's biggest features: it really is big! So big that you can't fit it in your pocket.

For me this size is the whole reason that I'm looking at the KA1: it will become my home reader and my small 6" Kindle can be a pocket sized traveller.

No, this is one of JSWolf's hobby horses. Any time someone suggests they might use an ereader without a cover, he will pipe in and say you must use one. Lately, he seems to be against people putting their ereaders in pockets. I don't know if he just has something against pockets, or he thinks people aren't using covers when they do this.

He's got a point with pant pockets. They can put a lot of stress on the screen or if it's in a back pocket you could sit on it which would likely crush the screen.

But being such a fierce advocate for never doing it rather than being sensible when you do and remembering it's in your pocket well...

I put my Glo HD, in it's official Kobo case, in the front pocket of my pants during short walks. The pocket is large and loose enough not to stress the device. In winter, I might use the pocket of whatever warm jacket I am wearing. The risk in both cases is very low and is probably no worse than putting it into my backpack. I've dropped things more often when putting them into the backpack than when putting them in my pocket.

If he was actually saying why he thinks it is a bad thing, and pointing to examples of reported problems, then OK, once or twice. But the idea that a "feature" of the Aura One is that it is to big to put into most pockets is absurd.

And I won't deny that I was having a little fun when I followed his post with my original post about pockets. But, I was also getting close to my limit on how many times I was willing to read his statement.

IMHO a calibre conversion is as good a way as any if (big IF) you get your conversion settings right. However some people will argue that the calibre KindleUnpack plugin is a better option because it just does a format shift rather than a full conversion.
. I use KindleUnpack mostly because it's a lot faster than a conversion. One caveat, though: it will also leave all internal HTML files intact, even if the book is just one huge file. In my experience, my H2O doesn't like that, and gets very slow on such epubs.

I use the Quality Check plugin to check for 'oversized HTML files' (under Epub Structure) and do an epub-to-epub conversion on those to fix it.

Looking at some of the reviews, it looks like there are two adjustments for lighting: Brightness and Natural Light. Is there any finer control? Looking at some of the reviews, it seems to get very "orange" in low light? I was hoping to be able to set the RGB values individually. Even for normal reading, some people like white, some blue, some yellow: being able to customize the color would be nice.

Maybe a patch could be done?

Ow man, one of the simplest purest joys in life is using your favourite piece of beautiful tech (phone, ipads, ereaders etc.) naked. With particular reference to the iPhone 5 and the Kindle Oasis. Such luxury! And it makes that inevitable first scratch all the more painful.

Eh, the colour of the light doesnt bother me, as long as it is one colour and uniform! Also other blue-light filters (flux, etc.) are very - VERY - orange at their highest settings whereas others (bluelight filter for android) are a lot more subtle - and can change from orange to blue to green hues etc.

Just out of interest John, if you wanted to change the device colours, what colours would you make it? I think personally a nice, flush white is adequate but what do I know.

JSWolf's comments on covers did get me to buy a cheap sleep cover from ebay, but I also put my Aura in my front pocket. When I am traveling for work I like to go to dinner and read. If I set the Aura down in the car, it is most like going to be there when I get into the restaurant... So a loose front pocket works. I also feel a little odd walking into a restaurant with an ereader in my hand, and a really big ereader would be even more obvious.

The back seat pocket of an airplane is really a worse risk for me. 2 times I have left ereaders there. One was retrieved before the plane left the gate, one got an extended tour and some frequent flyer miles before it found a way home a week or so later (thanks United!) My loose front pocket or backpack are much safer in light of my poor short term memory.

Disappointing that the minimum brightness is actually brighter than the H2O. Hopefully the reduction in blue light would help with this, in combination with the Night Mode hack. Another criticism was uneven lighting, but the author of the review thinks Kobo dealt with it relatively well.

Well in terms of a cover my KA1 will be a pampered stay-at-home eReader and will therefore just receive a simple protective sleeve.

"Closer to perfect" - sounds good to me!

The purest joys? I really never liked "naked" devices. I always at least have a bumpercase. Either the device is too cold, too thin, too slippery... With a cover, I can put something on it that will make it more comfortable for me.

I'm not sure, which is why I would like to be able to try different settings.

I think I would tend to prefer something that isn't too white; probably something a little warmer.

Maybe cerem0ny meant that the user should be naked rather than the device.

Such are the ambiguities of the English language, as the "naked" would appear to be associated with the verb "using" and therefore to the person and not the device. (This might also confirm why the first scratch would be more painful, i.e. having no clothes for protection.)
