I'm half tempted to defend Amazon here, I read one Liaden book and there may be more made up words than not made up, I certainly feel sympathy for the proof reader.

1) The title we are discussing was published by BAEN, not some solo gig.
That alone should have triggered a second

2) The book genere SF or Fantasy Notorious for made up places or things.

Theducks has been leaving Amazon reviews (they asked ) lambasting the choice of words (mostly homophones) that do not fit the context.
Every last one has been SPELLED CORRECTLY.
They are still WRONG

All vowels are more or less pronounced as in most Romance languages. I.e., a is usually pronounced as in it. cappuccino or fr. avoir, not as in bad or cat. If you happen to be familiar with IPA symbols, a is pronounced as [ɑ].

Because you are used to pronounce certain letters and letter combinations different depending on context. The 'u' in but sounds different than in burn. The beauty of arabic is that it is the only language that has no exceptions on how to pronounce a written word. When necessary you have to WRITE it different. So when you have eat, the past tense ate simple enough, they also sound different. Now, how do you do that with read, past tense read, pronounced different, but written the same. You won't ever have that in arabic. If you go from read to past tense you have to write it rEAd (a different sounding version of the same letters).

Doitsu could probably explain that much better. Except that even simply reading arabic (without understanding the meaning) is complicated enough.

It would seem to have more to do with the alphabet used.

e.g. Hebrew (chosen because it is the only language other than English which I have any experience with) uses Nekudot instead of vowels, which indicate the actual sound you should make unlike English vowels. I cannot think of any Hebrew word (written with Nekudot intact) which can potentially be pronounced two different ways...

I believe the dots are optional and simply a pronunciation guide? Or are they mandatory nowadays? Hebrew itself does not have vowels in the alphabet.

Edit: I probably should have said language that uses an alphabet in post #143. Chinese symbols may or may not be mispronounced (no idea) - and I wouldn't consider it a alphabet.

Actually, I think these days they are going out of style.

But I mainly use Hebrew for my religious paraphernalia where it is still in use (except for Gemarah, which traditionally never had Nekudot, but Tuvia's has some very nice editions with Nekudot ).
