I know that with Star Wars, Lucas envisioned a 9 movies fairly early in the process. The original idea was to do the first 3, go back and do the 3 early movies, then finish the last three movies with the original actors, but as the years went by, that became impractical. I think that Rowling's best bet would be to do something like the new movie, i.e. move on from Harry Potter and explore that universe with different characters. She talked about writing some books from Colin Creevey's point of view. |

I know I would much rather an author simply write more material rather than try to retcon what people read through after-the-fact "word of God" proclamations.

But just as much as I believe that, I also believe it is a reader's responsibility to keep their own "canon." If the books suffice for you (rhetorical you), then let them suffice. Don't seek out extra-book proclamations or confirmation of your interpretations of what you read. You don't have to read what Rowling (or anyone else) is saying about a finished product. It's OK to separate a work from its creator and their musings. It's not possible for an author to "turn me against" books of theirs I've already read and enjoyed. No matter what comes after. I do listen to what some of my favorite authors have to say. Just not so much what they have to say about their own finished works. Those book experiences are now mine. I won't suffer their creators' attempts to retroactively affect, alter or refine those experiences. I simply don't care what I was "supposed" to take away from them. I'd see this play, though (and maybe even read the script). If it was close by and I could afford it, of course. But rest assured; whatever I thought of the play would have no effect on my feelings about the Harry Potter book series. That's a done deal. Nor do I care if future fans' first experiences of the series is not based on the same "canon" as mine was. Last edited by DiapDealer; 07-31-2016 at 11:49 AM. |

Oddly enough, several of my friends have children who went to the midnight event and have already finished (and loved) the script. Color me surprised.

So Harry is "done" (not that that couldn't change), but of course that doesn't necessarily mean the larger world around Harry Potter is done. We know at the very least there will be the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie later this year and it's sequel(s) after that. |

Although I filled in much of the details as I read, watching the play would probably do far more justice to the story...so I hope it comes to the US.

I would have preferred a full-length book since the imagery and settings mean so much to the stories. |

I enjoyed the 7 HP books, I felt absolutely no need to dig deep into characters, motivations and inconsistencies. I also have enjoyed some fanfic from G. Norman Lippert who wrote a series of books (4 in all) about Harry's son James (which makes more sense to me than Severus but there ya go)... For those interested, lightweight but enjoyable reads can be found at http://www.jamespotterseries.com/indexOriginal.html
