Line spacing with sub- and superscripts

I have various books with subscripts or superscripts in them and I am trying to convert them via Calibre from RTF to LRF format. The output file always increases the line height in the lines where these codes are and I wondered if it was possible to change something so that the line space was the same throughout. I have attached a small RTF file I have set up to test this and the output LRF file.
Attached Files
File Type: rtf 1a Test of formatting - 1a Anon.rtf (79.6 KB, 99 views)
File Type: lrf 1a Test of formatting - 1a Anon.lrf (2.2 KB, 88 views)

LRF is a legacy format, dont convert to it? There is no way to control this in LRF. You can control it in epub, by using appropriate CSS.

Thank you Kovid, I will be sad to lose LRF but I might start converting everything to EPUB then. How would I control line spacing if I do this? Sorry but I don't understand much about how to set up CSS, how would I do that?
