I wonder if Charles River Editors is trying to move into the larger-book arena. The books of theirs that I'm accustomed to seeing are in the 25-75 page range, this one is 247 pages! Or maybe they've been doing the longer books for some time but I just haven't been observant enough to notice . . . . |

For computer nerds interested in early personal computer history, the first part of an autobiography or memoir by Gary Kildall is available for free download from the Computer History Museum, in pdf format. The last part of the memoir will not be publicly released. The only requirement for downloading is an agreement not to reproduce, publicly display, or distribute it online or in print.

Thanks for your posts. I was not aware of the museum. Here's a deep, philosophical question: if I am as old or older than some of the equipment in the museum, do I qualify as a museum piece? ![]() Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-08-2016 at 04:45 PM. |

Book about the "Dartmouth Murders"--Marked Down Hugely (93%) and Highly Rated.
The 93% markdown is from the digital list price.
Frankly, I don't remember hearing about the events in this book at the time that they happened. But the book sure seems like it would be an engrossing read, if you're into this kind of thing. And at 448 pages, likely you're not going to run out of interesting reading for a good while. Judgment Ridge: The True Story Behind the Dartmouth Murders. By Dick Lehr; Michael Zuckoff. Rated 4.3 stars, from 61 reviews, at Amazon at the present moment. Print list price $14.99; digital list price $13.49; Kindle price now $0.99. HarperCollins e-books, publisher. 448 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Judgment-Ridg.../dp/B001QIGZL8. Book Description A riveting investigation of the brutal murders of two Dartmouth professors –– a book that, like In Cold Blood, reveals the chilling reality behind a murder that captivated the nation. On a cold night in January 2001, the idyllic community of Dartmouth College was shattered by the discovery that two of its most beloved professors had been hacked to death in their own home. Investigators searched helplessly for clues linking the victims, Half and Susanne Zantop, to their murderer or murderers. A few weeks later, across the river, in the town of Chelsea, Vermont, police cars were spotted in front of the house of high school senior Robert Tulloch. The police had come to question Tulloch and his best friend, Jim Parker. Soon , the town discovered the incomprehensible reality that Tulloch and Parker, two of Chelsea's brightest and most popular sons, were now fugitives, wanted for the murders of Half and Susanne Zantop. Authors Mitchell Zuckoff and Dick Lehr provide a vivid explication of a murder that captivated the nation, as well as dramatic revelations about the forces that turned two popular teenagers into killers. Judgement Ridge conveys a deep appreciation for the lives (and the devastating loss) of Half and Susanne Zantop, while also providing a clear portrait of the killers, their families, and their community –and, perhaps, a warning to any parent about what evil may lurk in the hearts of boys. |

Vaccinated: Triumph, Controversy, and An Uncertain F
by Paul A. Offit M.D. is $1.99 at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Vaccinated-Tr...ted#nav-subnav Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/ebook/vaccinated Below is the blurb: Maurice Hilleman's mother died a day after he was born and his twin sister stillborn. As an adult, he said that he felt he had escaped an appointment with death. He made it his life's work to see that others could do the same. Born into the life of a Montana chicken farmer, Hilleman ran off to the University of Chicago to become a microbiologist, and eventually joined Merck, the pharmaceutical company, to pursue his goal of eliminating childhood disease. Chief among his accomplishments are nine vaccines that practically every child gets, rendering formerly dread diseases—including often devastating ones such as mumps and rubella—practically toothless and nearly forgotten; his measles vaccine alone saves several million lives every year. Vaccinated is not a biography; Hilleman's experience forms the basis for a rich and lively narrative of two hundred years of medical history, ranging across the globe and throughout time to take in a cast of hundreds, all caught up, intentionally or otherwise, in the story of vaccines. It is an inspiring and triumphant tale, but one with a cautionary aspect, as vaccines come under assault from people blaming vaccines for autism and worse. Paul Offit clearly and compellingly rebuts those arguments, and, by demonstrating how much the work of Hilleman and others has gained for humanity, shows us how much we have to lose. |

[B]Marriage and the Family in the Middle Ages
by Frances Gies is $0.99 at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Marriage-Fami...8-1#nav-subnav Below is the blurb: A compelling, lucid, and highly readable chronicle of medieval life written by the authors of the bestselling Life in a Medieval Castle and Life in a Medieval City Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family, the basic social unit throughout human history. This book traces the development of marriage and the family from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. It describes how the Roman and barbarian cultural streams merged under the influence of the Christian church to forge new concepts, customs, laws, and practices. Century by century it follows the development -- sometimes gradual, at other times revolutionary -- of significant elements in the history of the family: The basic functions of the family as production unit, as well as its religious, social, judicial, and educational roles. The shift of marriage from private arrangement between families to public ceremony between individuals, and the adjustments in dowry, bride-price, and counter-dowry. The development of consanguinity rules and incest taboos in church law and lay custom. The peasant family in its varying condition of being free or unfree, poor, middling, or rich. The aristocratic estate, the problem of the younger son, and the disinheritance of daughters. The Black Death and its long-term effects on the family. Sex attitudes and customs: the effects of variations in age of men and women at marriage. The changing physical environment of noble, peasant, and urban families. Arrangements by families for old age and retirement. |

Two freebies from Fritzen Media. I just found out about the company today. They are kind of Charles-River-Editors-esce, it appears.

There's this company that I found called Hourly History Ltd.. Their focus is on "publishing history books that are concise, straightforward and take no longer than one hour to read."
The company seems to differ from the gazillions of re-publishers that are out there in the fact that these books appear to be written by people in recent times. They also differ in that they publish what their theme says: concise history books. They currently have a couple of dozen or so free ebooks at Amazon. If you'd like to check into them, go to this webpage. When I did the search, all of the ebooks on the first page happened to be free and all of those beginning with the first one on the second page were not free. If you like what you see, and would like to keep informed by Hourly History of whatever that they want to inform you of, follow this link and sign up for their emails. The webpage doesn't mention it, but if you do that, they will send you a free copy (PDF) of British History in 50 Events, by Henry Freeman. It's formatted more like a research paper than an ebook, but perhaps you will find it helpful. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-14-2016 at 05:57 PM. |
