Ehh, there's not one right way to read Discworld. There's multiple possible ways. I usually recommend a particular sub-series to people based on their interests, helps them get into it faster.

Actually, that's all wrong. The way to read Discworld for the first time IS in published order. For one thing, you won't know what sub-series t read until you've at least read one book.

But most important is that places and background characters have ongoing story arcs that progress as the series progresses. You don't get that if you read out of order. You lose that cohesion that Terry so masterfully created. If you read out of order, you lose a lot of the subtly to what's going on and could even encounter spoilers to other sub-series. Terry doesn't recap. He does a great job weaving the main characters in and out of the differing locations along with the background characters. This all goes away if you read out of order. You will lose some of the magic of Discworld by reading out of order. Losing the magic means the series is not as special as it really is and you'll regret it.

I disagree. Primarily because reading THE COLOUR OF MAGIC first might put one off of reading any others. (It's far from being the best of the Discworld books, imo, and Rincewind is definitely an acquired taste.)

If, for example, you think you might enjoy Death or the Witches or the Watch better, there is no reason not to start with MORT or WYRD SISTERS or GUARDS! GUARDS! They are early in the chronology, and I think it's far better to get exposed to Discworld & Pratchett through tales that align with your interests than sticking to a strict publication order.

Isn't the idea to do a countdown? Start with "The Shepherd's Crown" and read them in decreasing series number.

And here again is the correct reading order. Start at the first line and read from left to right. Then go to the next line and read from left to right and so on until you finish the series.
