Me too. Why would they go with a bigger unit but same size screen?

I've skimmed this thread and think I see two hopes (GSM communications and a larger screen). Are there no rumors about what might be released (assuming anything is new)?

HAHAHA...Bob, I had one of those Compaq luggables in 1984ish...LOVED it and when I went back to college I took it with me every day. All 23lbs of it...looked like I was lugging around a Singer Sewing machine wherever I went...hahaha...thanks for dredging up that memory, it made me laugh!

As to the topic at hand, sure would be interesting to see a new Kindle. I just hope it's actually not just a change in aesthetics and also addresses many of the real issues with the device. Though my primary issue with all eink devices will not be addressed until they improve the contrast ratio's on the display...but in time they will, hopefully I am not dead by then.

The word "ever" according to my Mac' dictionary means "at all times; always." Also, you have an interesting thought of what is "ancient".

Also, my opinion differs from your opinion since the "uglyness" of something can only be opinion. I don't see the Kindle as ugly.

Ok... so my feeling is that they are not going to announce a new 6inch device. It will be one of the following in order to my mind of possibility:

1. A new firmware versions for the current device that adds some major features. Could be:
a. Folder support
b. ePub support
c. PDF support

2. The sale of Kindle books for non-Kindle devices.

3. A GSM rev of the same device for Europe and/or Asia and/or Australia.

4. A larger screen sized unit

5. A rev of the current device with the Epson controller or move to the plastic screen.

6. Least likely a whole new rev of the 6inch device with different case similar to pics that were previously leaked. Although non-replaceable battery and no SD card slot seem like steps backward that I can't see them taking.

Watch out what Amazon has to say on Thursday when they present their fourth-quarter results. Perhaps they'll give some revealing insight regarding the Kindle and outlook.

NYT's Brad Stone:

Quote:
Amazon would not comment in any more detail about the coming announcement, but the Kindle’s detail page on Amazon.com tells the story. It now says the electronic book reader will ship in four to six weeks. It previously suggested a wait of 11 to 13 weeks.
This and the fact that Bezos himself will host the event is evidence for him that that the press conference will involve the unveiling of the Kindle 2.

I've also seen the theory of a cost-reduced model which wouldn't be a bad thing.

Less impact with the ugly-stick would be good. While probably not the "fugliest ever," it is far too fugly. I'm curious about the next e-ink screen evolution.

I kind of want to hop on a bus to New York and see the hype (after I prominently show off my PRS505 with its beautiful case)

I just followed the link to the Kindle page on Amazon and see that there's some optimist trying to sell a used one for $1,100.00 + $5.99 shipping

Had he done this right before Christmas, he would have had a great chance of selling it for that price. even with the shipping.

However, he may as well put a $39.99 tag on it.......until Bezo's makes his announcement.

"Fire and Brimstone"? Moi?? Nah, if you don't actually own one, I can't take your opinion seriously.

And .... I don't particularly care what they come out with. I have three Kindles. I think they are beautiful. Also, since I disagree with you, your "without a doubt" comment doesn't mean much to me.

Let's hope that you get yourself a Sony, shall we?? Form over function and all that sort of thing?

Oh my. Another comment from a Sony owner. Gee, guys, we know you don't like the Kindle. Otherwise you would have bought a Kindle. Right? And, are those of us who have Kindles and love them supposed to run right out an get something else because you don't like the looks of it? Really?? You are going with that idea? Good luck with it.

I always have to wonder about people who have nothing better to do than bash the other guy's device .... and then they turn around and whine that they don't have the particular functionality or access that the other device has.

For the record, unless a whole bunch of people vote you in as the design-czar for the world. I really don't give even the tiniest rats ass about your views of what is ugly, fugly, or any other iteration of same.
