Deactive Anniversary update.

After you revert to the previous Windows Build, you can disable the update by using the MS tool provided in this URL:

I've solved the problem by turning off the update service. No more updates, but also no AU update. I do have to update Windows Defender manually, but I'll do that once a week.

This is for updates and won't work for upgrades.

I don't think Jwolf's solution is a good idea due to the fact you are missing out on security updates. You do have the option to postpone windows upgrades for a few months (under advanced in the update section), this is in my opinion the way to go for now.

Not sure what's going on with Win10 upgrade but wanted to report this:

My PC Win10 version 1511 build 10586.545

Plugged in a friends kobo Glo (untweaked & unpatched) to see what would happen - no complaints from Win10, Calibre views it perfectly.

Is it perhaps that build 10586.545 doesn't have the issue that has been plaguing some Win10 PC's??

I think Win10 1607 is the problematic Anniversary update. Win10 1511 is OK. My PC is Win10 1511 build 10586 and is fine.

My PC died today PSU blew up, and that was already the warranty replacement from last year when the same thing happened... hope Corsair will send me another one.

If you have an old netbook you're no longer using because switching firefox tabs takes a minute - that's my rig right now - well, it's still good enough for copying ebooks onto the Kobo using 32bit version of Calibre

All you need is a little patience... Intel Atom N270 didn't seem THAT slow a few years ago but it is.

Official reaction Kobo Support:

Hi Henk,

You contacted us in regards to having issues with Kobo after you updated to Windows 10. We apologize that the troubleshooting step that was provided to you has failed.

We have learned that Microsoft is preparing a build to resolve this issue. In Early September you will be able to receive a version of KDA and the device firmware that can be installed to work around this issue. Around mid to late September, Kobo will release an over-the air-update to devices.

In the mean time, please use WIFI to sync to your devices.

The KDA can still be used to make purchases but the syncing will need to take place over WIFI.

Aaaah - OK. I was assuming as my PC received a big update yesterday it had the dreaded AU. So will block my updates now and hold out until Sept. Thanks Jackie

Answer from Kobo support: not clear for me! Three patches to solve the bug?
1- Microsoft: one specific build
2- Kobo: a new version of KDA (I assume Kobo Desktop Application) with a KOBOEREADER device firmware
3- Kobo: a WIFI update to the KOBOEREADER device firmware (same as 2?, for people without a PC?)
So we have to wait until September.

It can't, really... if you VIEW INSTALLED UPDATES you will see OS upgrades are not included: everything is a patch for security, Office... that kind of thing.

Does build 14901 fix this for anyone?

I have just installed Windows 10 insider preview build 14901 and it has fixed this problem for me at least, just wondering if anyone else has tried it yet or not.

Very nice. So this might mean the issue is fixed for the next version of Windows 10.

MS broke it, so they should fix it. If there is something broken that they really need to fix, then the need to give a bit of warning. And explain why it hasn't been fixed in the at least five years that Kobo have been doing this.
Quote:
2- Kobo: a new version of KDA (I assume Kobo Desktop Application) with a KOBOEREADER device firmware
The current version of the Kobo desktop application doesn't work with the Win10 update. It is probably just a library change that needs a recompile of the application, but it does mean that the application cannot be automatically updated.
Quote:
3- Kobo: a WIFI update to the KOBOEREADER device firmware (same as 2?, for people without a PC?)
So we have to wait until September.
The firmware updates isn't the same as the desktop application, but they are usually released at the same time.

What I hope happens is:
  1. MS revert the change quickly. If it is really needed, they give notice it will be reimplimented in the future.
  2. Kobo put something in the desktop application to solve the problem when devices are connected. That way, a firmware update can be installed from the PC.
  3. The firmware update includes a change to solve the problem long term. This probably means an update to the recovery partition as well.

I'm not confident that the first will happen. And that means that Kobo have to do one or both of the others. What it does mean is that people will have to move to the latest firmware if they want to continue using Windows 10.

Win 10 Redstone 2 - the next release after WIN 10 AU (Redstone 1) recognized the KOBO (at least Glo HD) correctly -- So join windows insider program select fast and update. Problem resolved.
