It is - install the patch and a single click right or left of the brightness bar will change it 1%.

I always have it at 7%. When turning night-mode on (colours are reversed) I have just enough contrast to read, without being too much blinded by it, and during the day I don't see the backlight at all. It's only when I'm in a lit room that is not well-lit, will I turn up the backlight a bit.

Have a look in the Kobo Developer's Corner.

(ps: it's a frontlight. E-ink displays can't be backlit; they're opaque.)

I knew somebody would say that... I know it's a frontlight, but I'll still call it a backlight. Simply because if I say frontlight, everybody I know will think it's a clip-on light. Somebody who knows nothing about ereaders except that you can read on it, will not know nor see the difference between a layer beneath the text layer or a layer on top of the text layer.

And I did look in the developer's corner, but I don't see anything about a patch.

Why would I want to read about how to update my devices with the firmware? I just turn on the wifi and it updates... I must be dense or something, because I thought you meant there was a small patch like with the nightmode switching (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=257246)

Thanks again.
In a well lit room, I have the light off. Why use the light when you don't need to? All it does is eat at the battery for no good reason. A well lit room needs no light. Also in sunlight I do not use the light.

In the dark in bed, I use 4%. But, the font I am using is my modified Charis SIL called ChareInk. It has enough weight to it that I don't need to up it with the advanced font controls. Plus it's a very nice looking font on an eInk screen.

Clipped onto the headboard of the bed is a nice flex neck LED lamp that I can use to point at the screen for reading when I don't need the light on in the bedroom with the LED lamp.

I'm not one of those types that keeps the light on all the time. There's no need The Carta screen has good contrast and with a Kobo, you can adjust the font weight so you won't always need the light on. Plus there is a patch to allow advanced font control to work with side loaded TTF fonts.

I was replying to effnflowers, who said "If only it was easier to change the brightness by 1%. " The patch is the way to make that happen (as well as a bunch of other neat things). If you don't want it, don't read about it, I guess? *shrug*

After reading that thread, I think the title is confusing. I saw the title and thought it was simply a thread about the firmware. Not about a patch you can put on top of that firmware.

I would love that brightness thing, but I don't care about the rest of that patch...

you don't want advance font control where you can change the weight of your fonts? For me this is what makes a Kobo special.

Thanks for the tip, now that's a good reason for me to dig in to the firmware patches. I'm trying to decide how to organize the library so the series info will be useful, I'm thinking collections by author, but once I finish that I'll check out the firmware patch stickies.

Thanks again

I prefer the whiter background hence the 20% setting. At least 20 is better than the 65, that gave me eye strain, I was running when I first got it.

I don't pay attention to the background. I pay attention to the words.
