This confused me a bit.. since I remembered that when JB'ing my PW3, the registration remained intact.
However,
  1. I connected to Wi-Fi and registered again. You said above "...give the Kindle a little on-line time to get into sync with the Amazon records." Maybe I should have done that?
  2. Copied the KT3 update file over to the kindle USB root
  3. Did a md5sum check of the file on the kindle from my Ubuntu CLI
  4. Pressed the "update your kindle" button
Everything went through normally, though the screen remained static on the "boy under tree" image for a while during the restart.
I can see the "file.ser" and "version.ser" files in the kindle USB root. (What are these?)
The "Device Info" button confirms that I'm on version 5.8.0

So, I'm now ready for the branch delay step..
Any opinion on whether I can proceed?
You mean the initial factory image file was what you just installed?

If so, just keep on following the steps in order.

= = = = =

There must be something about the 5.8.x firmware that does not quite match the directions.

So let us know if there are any other things that don't seem to match what you are seeing.

I really, really hope I don't have to write a set of directions for each and every Amazon firmware that is out there.

Personally, I use "HashMyFiles" (integrated into the "right-click" context menu) on this computer. My other computers have different tools (whatever google result got my attention when I needed an MD5 tool for windows)... No real preferences -- whatever gets the job done without too much annoyance (though I do use many free tools from NirSoft on a regular basis).

The first on that list also runs under Wine.

Although it computes the md5 sum correctly, it only accepts sha1 verification files, not md5 verification files.
Which leaves it to using your eyeballs to compare the sums.

Somebody other than me deal with this please, I don't know windows.

I use RapidCRC to create MD5 files. It is also associated with .MD5 files on my win10 development laptop, so just double-clicking an MD5 file will verify its corresponding bin file.

Shall I reset again to begin JB? The first reset disconnected my kindle from amazon and there were some docs downloaded after connecting to amazon again. I deleted them and now there is only users guide.

I don't think that matters.
Just follow the steps in order.
You have done steps 1 & 2.
Let's see you have reset the device.
Now do step 3.

Done. Now proud owner of JB'd KT3W!
No other hiccups. Everything happened as mentioned in the instructions.
For KT3 I followed the recommended method for KUAL installation, using the booklet version.
Have installed kterm, explorer, leafpad, Eboard Chess, rgbpaint, gargoyle.. all work OK.

Somehow, the lower 600x800 resolution seems to look better..! Especially for the older extensions..

Maybe we can do without the factory reset.

The registration is required to install the hotfix (can not reach the UYK menu entry unregistered in some firmware versions).

So we either get rid of the 'reset' or we add a 'now fix the registration'

I'll give this some thought, and maybe even put my kt2 back together for some testing.

I enabled UYK on my PW3 by starting the registration procedure on my kindle, but cancelling and selecting "continue later" (or similar wording) while scanning for wifi networks. This may not have worked if my PW3 had 3G network access. I did not need to complete the registration step after jailbreaking my kindle using this method.

That is the way it used to work.
What firmware version where you running?

Hmm...
The Branch Delay / eschwartz JB can only drop files -
Maybe drop a 'fake registration' file?
Naw, bad idea, that would trash any real registration file unless ash tar has the 'skip existing' option.

Are you sure it deregistered?

That sounds like it only updated to the current version firmware.

If it really isn't registered, register it again, and once your Amazon account and the 'Device Info' panel on your Kindle agree that it is registered, then just re-boot it.

If it is registered (both on the Amazon account page and in the 'Device Info' panel) -
then just re-boot it, the 'bridge' code will fix things up for you.

The notice will go away once you finish.

What firmware version do you want on it?
Download it from Amazon, follow their instructions to install it.
