Is that a thing? I can look into supporting download.archiveofourown.org links if it's something they use, but I don't recall seeing it before.

I haven't seen it before either. I guess they might show up if you download the story directly from the site and then add to calibre and update metadata via your plugin.

I forgot that AO3 had their own EPUB downloads. That's definitely something I should look into, then. Might be a few days, though.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the file taratears sent me earlier with that link was a .mobi.

That would make a huge difference. FFF only updates epubs--no other formats. Nor can it read the story URL from inside any other format.

That would also explain the behavior described--I assume everybody uses epub unless they say otherwise...

I use both. sometimes. I'm working on getting all of my stuff converted. Also, it worked fine retrieving for mobi if I downloaded it thru calibre itself. Is that a glitch?

FFF can't read the story URL from inside a mobi format. So if you didn't set the story URL in Calibre's identifier field, FFF won't have the story URL from a mobi format book downloaded separately and added to Calibre.

Next week I'll look into how FanFicFare deals with trying to update epubs downloaded directly from AO3, but I don't plan to make any changes regarding mobis.

That's fine, I didn't expect you to. I've fine with epubs. Ao3 recently had a overhaul, which may explain the changes.

I had a minute, so I just checked--a downloaded EPUB from AO3 for a recently updated story contained a normal story URL that existing FFF could find just fine.

So if you have example(s) of epubs or pages where this download.archiveofourown.org domain is used, I'd like to see them.

I've added the plugin to Calibre and wanted to start downloading stories from fanfiction.net. After pasting the URL of a story, the download starts, but does not go further than 1%. What can I do?

Wait patiently, probably. It does take time, especially if it's a story with many chapters. You can also post the story URL here and I'll check to see if it fails for me.

If you've been trying to download a bunch, you might also see the FAQs:

Why shouldn't I just select my entire library and use FanFicFare plugin to check for updates?

Maybe. If you read the FAQs referenced, you'll see that's more than is recommended.
