In the pastebin.com factory image links, for KT3, the
initial-eu.gunshi.org..bin
and
initial-eu.gunshi.org..md5
links are shown twice.

i.e, there are no
initial.gunshi.org..bin
and
initial.gunshi.org..md5
links.

However, these missing links do work.

Need to remove the "-eu" from the second set..

Yup, a typo (or cut&paste whoops).

I am sure our archivist or his alternate will get right on the fix.

Note:
There has been a recent policy change here, those 'live' links above are now allowed.
Once the operator of our third server returns from a short holiday, we will probably put the links directly into a Step #3 spoiler.

We should probably keep the pastebin current, even after copying the links to this thread. Though direct links can be an aid for bots to steal our bandwidth (e.g. archive.org keeps copies of almost all of the amazon firmware images).

No, that is for you to manually check whether the download was fine or corrupt.

Even though they will look/act/feel like 'live links' - not everything is what it seems in the Internet World.

What computer system did you download it too? (Linux, Mac, *BSD, *nix, B. Gates special, etc)

Ah, checking it is optional, only used for troubleshooting.

The packages have internal checksums and the checksums cryptographically signed, the Kindle installer will refuse to install a 'bad file'.

I do not think a 'reset' changes the registration, but it might, so check that it is still registered and give the Kindle a little on-line time to get into sync with the Amazon records.

I think win 7 directions on md5sum checking are in this thread, but I will have to look them up, unless geekmaster (or another Windows user) beats me to it.

After reset I connected to wi-fi and entered my amazon account. Device began downloading books that were on the device before reset. shall I reset again?

Is another reset necessary? after deleting content from amazon account the only file is users guide on my kindle. shall I reset it again while it is almost empty?

I'm now in the process of JB'ing my new KT3W.. and yes.. I can confirm it does make the KT3 "unregistered".. (my serial number: G000KA...)
This confused me a bit.. since I remembered that when JB'ing my PW3, the registration remained intact.
However,

I connected to Wi-Fi and registered again. You said above "...give the Kindle a little on-line time to get into sync with the Amazon records." Maybe I should have done that?
Copied the KT3 update file over to the kindle USB root
Did a md5sum check of the file on the kindle from my Ubuntu CLI
Pressed the "update your kindle" button

Everything went through normally, though the screen remained static on the "boy under tree" image for a while during the restart.
I can see the "file.ser" and "version.ser" files in the kindle USB root. (What are these?)
The "Device Info" button confirms that I'm on version 5.8.0

So, I'm now ready for the branch delay step..
Any opinion on whether I can proceed?

EDIT: I think vgreader above and I are in the same boat! Only I've done one step more.
