$2.95 -- The Element -- K Robinson, et al/ K Robinson, et al --> 8.0 hrs/ R-4.3 --> self-help

Quote:
The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

Whispersync: Audible ($2.95) | Kindle ($12.99)

The Element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the Element, they feel most themselves, most inspired, and achieve at their highest levels.

The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people: Paul McCartney; The Simpsons creator Matt Groening; Meg Ryan; Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera; journalist Arianna Huffington; renowned physicist Richard Feynman; and many others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: the diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities.

With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the Element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier and that once we have found our path, we can help others do so as well. The Element shows the vital need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about human resources and imagination. It is an essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities to meet the challenges of living and succeeding in the 21st century.

$1.99 -- An August Bride -- Debra Clopton/ Amber Quick --> 3.1 hrs/ R-5.0 --> romance

Quote:
An August Bride --> A Year of Weddings Series (book 9 of 12)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.99) | Kindle ($3.99)

A year's worth of novellas from 12 inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed. Kelsey vowed never to love a cowboy again. But then she meets Brent. After a cowboy broke her heart, Kelsey Wilcox traded in her boots for flip-flops and a bistro on the beautiful sandy beach of Corpus Christi. Two years later, still not believing in happy endings, she is about to endure a weekend of torture at her cousin's beach wedding. Not only will she be forced to watch yet another wedding, but her great-aunt and her two best friends - aptly nicknamed the "matchmaking posse of Mule Hollow" - are coming to the wedding, and Kelsey is sure to be on their radar. Brent Corbin has had his share of bad luck with women and isn't looking for love or looking forward to the weekend of wedding festivities as a groomsman for his friend. When he sees a commotion on the beach and what appears to be a mermaid in distress, he doesn't hesitate to dive to the rescue. His attention is instantly captured by the woman he's saved and it turns out they're part of the same wedding party. But the instant Kelsey spots his soaking wet boots she wants no part of him. Thrown together through the weekend, and with the meddlesome encouragement from the matchmakers, Brent is determined to pursue Kelsey and change her mind about cowboys. Sparks fly at this August wedding as Kelsey and Brent dance a rocky Texas two-step toward a beach wedding of their own.

Get a free set of 6 MP3's by Zig Ziglar called Strategies for Success: Blueprint for Achievement. This is provided by Zig Ziglar International.

Here's the blurb:
Strategies For Success is Zig's most principle-packed seminar to date for personal and professional development. In this exciting six DVD and CD program, you'll learn Zig's trusted methods to living a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life. Strategies For Success offers a balanced blend of personal & professional development tools that are sure to jump start, strengthen, and positively motivate anyone looking for success in life.

This appears to be a product that really has been marketed before, and not just some product created from bits and pieces from here and there in order to have a product to promote for free. They state that the set has a $299 value (probably a list price, that no one actually has ever had to pay). It's been hard to find much information about the series, but there is an audio cassette (used, of course) series offered at Amazon, that appears to be the same thing, for around $73. From what I could determine, the series appears to have been first created around 1998.

Here is the URL for the webpage that has the download link. This does not appear to be a one-time-use link as I was able to use it on another browser, using an variation of my name, another email address, etc. and was able to get it to work. However, if you have any problems getting the link to work, let me know and I will see what I can do.

Oh, the offer is good all the way through August.

$4.99 -- The Name of the Wind -- Patrick Rothfuss/ Nick Podehl --> 27.9 hrs/ R-4.6 --> fantasy

Quote:
The Name of the Wind --> Kingkiller Chronicle Series (book 1 of 2)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.99) | Kindle ($8.99)

Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - When you finish listening to The Name of Wind for the first time, you'll wonder where the hours went. When you listen again (and if you listen to it once, you will want to listen a second time) you'll marvel at the depth and intricacy of the fantasy world that Rothfuss has created. Details that initially seemed irrelevant will show themselves to be keystones of a greater story you didn't even notice the first time around. By the time your finger hovers over the Play button for a third time you'll realize that, to quote George R.R. Martin, "he's bloody good, this Rothfuss guy." —Michael

Publisher's Summary

"My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I have burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day. I have talked to God's, loved women and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me."

So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature - the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

$3.95 -- Burying Water -- KA Tucker/ Josh Goodman, et al --> 11.0 hrs/ R-4.3 --> contemporary

Quote:
Burying Water --> Burying Water Series (book 1 of 4)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($7.99)

The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory - and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives - but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to "Jane Doe" for another day, the woman renames herself "Water" for the tiny, hidden marking on her body - the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer - and happier - that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

$4.99 -- State of Wonder -- Ann Patchett/ Hope Davis --> 12.4 hrs/ R-4.0 --> contemporary

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($9.95) | Kindle ($9.99)

Best-selling author Ann Patchett and accomplished actor Hope Davis make a stellar combination for Patchett's latest novel, State of Wonder, an homage to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Davis deftly voices an international cast of medical researchers in the Amazon jungle. Her talents enhance Patchett's artistically descriptive prose, in many cases coiling the jungle imagery closer than you may want.

Hope Davis voices Dr. Marina Singh's stoic professionalism as she, a pharmacologist, is sent to the Amazon jungle by her employer to seek information about the death of a colleague. Only months earlier Dr. Anders Eckman had also been sent by the pharmaceutical company to investigate the secretive research of formidable Dr. Annick Swenson. In a terse, unemotional letter, Dr. Swenson has announced Dr. Eckman to be dead and buried.

Patchett's gift is to give characters multiple, very human layers, and Davis' gift is to bring those creations to life. Dr. Singh's reserve falls apart as she is plagued by unsettling nightmares and vivid memories of past medical mistakes. Dr. Annick Swenson's imperious personality has, through Hope Davis, the ability to intimidate through your earbuds. Dr. Swenson's arrogance keeps everyone quaking until, as the story unfolds, Davis' tone allows hints of humanity to ease through the doctor's sharp-edged exterior. Davis easily moves from dialects as the individual personalities - among them, a West African doctor, an Indonesian researcher, and a self-absorbed Australian couple - flow one from the other. Davis gives a brilliant performance of a prickly, uncomfortable argument between the married couple Alan and Nancy Saturn, making all who are listening want to distract themselves with the scenery.

Terrain itself becomes if not a character, a force, in State of Wonder. Contrasting Dr. Singh's beloved Minnesota plains with the claustrophobic, crawling, itching, frighteningly enveloping jungle, Patchett's words offer Hope Davis another opportunity to shine artistically. Davis infuses Patchett's prose with palpable energy, allowing listeners to exult in the wide, open prairies of the Midwest and then sense the creeping terror of forbidding, dangerously alive Amazonian jungle. While Davis' depiction of a confrontation with an anaconda is not to be missed, be forewarned that Patchett's imagery and Davis' performance will put anyone listening right beside the panic-stricken fictional characters as a life-and-death battle ensues.

For fans of Ann Patchett, State of Wonder is all that one has been waiting for and more. The story has as many twists and turns as, well, the Amazon jungle itself. And Hope Davis takes the joy of a new Ann Patchett book to an even higher level of pleasure through her masterful performance. It is a fantastically compelling adventure trip without the hazards of incessant bug bites, poisonous critters, or sweltering heat. —Carole Chouinard

This is sort of like a Whispersync deal. The only difference is that it's not.

The deal is on Ready Aim Fire!: A Practical Guide To Setting And Achieving Goals (Beyond The To Do List Book 1) (4.7 stars (94)), by Erik Fisher and Jim Woods. The way that the deal works is that you buy the ebook for $1.29 (currently marked down from the digital list price of $3.99). At the back of the book is a link to the audiobook.

When you click on the link for the audiobook, you will be encouraged (to put it nicely) to use Dropbox to store it. You can bypass Dropbox, though, and store it locally on your hard drive or somewhere else. It is a zip file. Zip files and I don't play very well together, and I had a little bit of a difficult time unzipping, extracting, and all of those things, but I finally accomplished it.

The narration is by one of the authors, Erik Fisher, but he is a podcaster, and this narration sounds very good.

Linky to the ebookie.

$3.95 -- The 4 Percent Universe -- Richard Panek/ Ray Porter --> 10.1 hrs/ R-4.0 --> astronomy

Quote:
The 4 Percent Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Race to Discover the Rest of Reality

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($9.99)

Over the past few decades, a handful of scientists have been racing to explain a disturbing aspect of our universe: only four percent of it consists of the matter that makes up you, me, our books, and every star and planet. The rest is completely unknown.

Richard Panek tells the dramatic story of the quest to find this “dark” matter and an even more bizarre substance called “dark energy”. This is perhaps the greatest mystery in all of science, and solving it will bring fame, funding, and certainly a Nobel Prize. Based on in-depth reporting and interviews with the major players—from Berkeley’s feisty, excitable Saul Perlmutter and Harvard’s witty but exacting Robert Kirshner to the doyenne of astronomy, Vera Rubin—the book offers an intimate portrait of the bitter rivalries and fruitful collaborations, the eureka moments and blind alleys, that have fueled their search, redefined science, and reinvented the universe.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Our view of the cosmos is profoundly wrong, and Copernicus was only the beginning: not just Earth, but all common matter is a marginal part of existence. Panek’s fast-paced narrative, filled with original reporting and behind-the-scenes details, brings this epic story to life for the very first time.

I appreciate the post.

I was looking at the copyright date. Noticed that it was 2011. The area of physics that this audiobook deals with is a fast-changing field. I wonder how up-to-date the information is. I think that Higgs Boson wasn't confirmed until after 2011 (maybe 2013?), although I don't know what, if anything, that has to do with dark energy and dark matter. I would have liked to have gotten a cheap audiobook on the subject, but I felt that I had to pass because of those considerations. Anyone want to weigh in? Amazon reviewers give it only a 3.9-star rating. I wondered about that, but didn't read any of the lower-rated reviews to see what their issues were.
