Kobo arrived today

The H2O arrived today and it looks pretty good. One tiny scuff on the bezel at the bottom and nothing on the edges or back. The top of the bezel has two very tiny bumps in the center right next to the screen. Does anyone know if this is normal or does it indicate the bezel has been removed?

The setup went okay and now I'm just waiting for it to finish charging so I can get on with some reading.

Edit: It was hard to capture in the pictures but it's the two shinny spots on either side of the dark spot in the middle of the pictures. There is a bigger gap between the bezel and the thin inner frame that runs from one shinny spot to the other. It can be seen in the second picture. I'm wondering if the the gap is supposed to be there or if it's from the bezel being pried off?

A picture would help us maybe know what's what with those bumps.

Doh, I should have thought of that before.

If the bezel had been removed at any point there'd probably be a gap between the bezel and the back of the device. If you turn up the frontlight to 100% and then go in a dark room see if there is any light spilling over the sides.

It shouldn't be possible to tell from the front, the bezel is very flexible and does not take damage on removal, it's the glue/water seal between bezel/display/and back that turns "lumpy" on removal so it's not a perfect fit afterwards. Or at least that how it was for me.

There's no harm to the reading experience. As for the waterproofness you should not trust it too much anyhow.

Thanks for the tip. I turned the brightness up to 100% went in the bathroom and closed the door and didn't see any light leaking. I also placed it face down on the counter and didn't see any light leaking so the divot I see in the bezel must just be the way it was made.

I do have one last question. I've been reading for a while with the brightness set at 35% and I've noticed slightly darker rows alternating with lighter rows going from the left edge of the screen to the right edge. I tried to get some pictures but it's hard to get the rows to show up. I mostly notice it on short pages when there isn't text going all the way to the bottom of the page. Is this normal?

Thanks for all the help and this should be my last "is this normal" question.

I don't have rows... there is a small area at the bottom where the light is not perfect but even that area is regular (thin dark horizontal stripe)

I use light only at a very low level (5%), can't read without proper room/ambient light which would also work for a paper book, so the builtin light is only a slight assistance.

If I turn the light up higher it appears slightly blueish on my device... on my mothers H2O it's perfect white and others I've seen are outright yellow. I think there is a wide range of things that are considered normal...

You'd see extreme stripe/shadow if one of the LEDs was a dud though. However if this was the case it should always be visible regardless how much text you have on screen

That sounds like ghosting. Try setting the page refresh to a lower number.

I had it set to 3 so I'll try setting it to 1 for a while and see if that does anything.

Other than the couple of things I've posted I really like it. I added the Bookerly font and the Kobo is awesome to read with. I didn't want it to seem like I was nit picking it.

Thanks

Could be ghosting as booklover6 says - but if an every-page refresh doesn't fix it and you can't get it to show on photos, I suggest that it might simply be afterimages. Adjusting the brightness may or may not help.

I set the page refresh to 1 and it didn't really help. I noticed quite by accident that that if I leave the same page on the screen for 50 - 60 seconds the dark rows fade away and then I have a uniform screen. Oh and I don't see the dark rows when I first turn it on after it's been sleeping but once it warms up, maybe 3 or 4 pages, it comes back. So is this normal?

It shows photos okay, when I mentioned pictures I meant that I can't take pictures of the screen to post that show what I'm talking about.

Sorry for the separate reply but multi-quote has stopped working for me.

That's what I meant. If your eyes are perceiving the horizontal rows while reading (and you would not expect to see this when you first start reading, but after a short while), but you can't get the rows to show objectively on photographs of the screen, it sounds to me like you're seeing afterimages. Which is a normal visual phenomenon.

Ah, now I get what you mean. But I'm not sure why the dark rows would disappear after the same page sits on the screen for a minute or so.

You were right about the afterimages. After doing additional testing it is an issue with my eyes. Thanks for suggesting it, as the rows would have driven me crazy otherwise.

Lowering the brightness seems to help a little. What brightness setting do other H2O users run when reading during the day in a well lit room? I'm at 28.

Thanks again.

Mine stays at 19-20 most of the time. Glad to see you've figured it out.
