I see that Jack McDevitt is a former naval officer. Can someone tell me whether his spaceships are really spaceships, or are they just ocean-going ships in disguise, like Jack Campbell's?

Have you read Stephen Euin Cobb's Bones Burnt Black? It's a hard sci-fi one-off with a closed-room type mystery baked in (pun not intended). Not really military sci-fi, but at least the physics is more realistic than most (to my amateur eye).

Ironhand's Daughter
by David Gemmell is $1.99 at Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...d-s-daughter-1 Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Ironhands-Dau...ter#nav-subnav Below is the blurb: The armies of the Outlanders crushed the highlanders at the battle of Colden Moor–killing their finest warriors and breaking their freeborn spirit. The highlanders are now a conquered people, ruled by the brutal Baron Gottasson. Prophecies speak of the coming of a new leader, a descendent of Ironhand, mightiest of the highland kings. A leader who will throw off the Outlander yoke. But only one highlander carries the blood of Ironhand: Sigarni, a wild and willful teenage girl who cares for nothing save her own concerns. Until a fateful encounter thrusts her onto a path of rebellion. Now, hunted by the baron’s soldiers and stalked by an evil sorcerer, Sigarni will be forced to fulfill her destiny . . . or perish. |

If you do it, I think you would be missing quite a bit then.
I do not like much the Alex Benedict series, which seems to me to be not well placed in time, describing a civilization of 7-8000 years in the future which seems remarkably similar to ours, but for a few things which are better, but not so much, after all. There is very compelling mistery side, which is quite good, but the environment spoils it for me. Totally different story for the Academy series: the technology is very well balanced, and the Priscilla Hutching character is really good. The search for extraterrestial intellingence is portrayed in the books in a way which I have rarely read. There is always something lingering just a little bit out of sight, tantalizing and compelling. Tastes may differ, but personally I would strongly advice to try at least "The engines of God" and "Deepsix". I haven't read the books after the fourth, but I will do it now. Just the opering scene of the first book, with the alien sculpture on one of the frozen moon Iapetus is a small masterpiece. Hope you can enjoy it |
