Only if I zoomed in...pencil worked, highlight didn't.

Is the text recognized as 'text' within the pdf or is it just a scanned image PDF?

buy or wait

Getting the DPTS1 to Germany (paying 599 from B&H) costs around 815 bucks. Not cheap... What is your view or whether one should perhaps wait a few months to see whether Sony is thinking of a new version? Does one run the risk of no new version and old version sold out? Thanks!

Crazy that it is not available in Germany. Do you imagine that will change? Are there simply few of these around?

I think the Sony has OCR so the text would have to have peculiar style or something to be unrecognizable. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

Impossible to say if a new version/revision is around the corner, especially as the Sony DPT-S1 didn't actually come out with fanfares.

I feel inclined to recommend waiting for rumors or announcements of a new device, because as it is the Sony DPT-S1 is clearly underpowered. What do you need it for?

My guess is no, but don't count on it.

DPT-S1 only allows the marker tool for text, if it's a scanned image you can't use the marker. Than you have to use the pencil. This goes for every device of this kind (Surface PRO, Sony Vaio Tab 11...). You can test it with the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your PC: If it doesn't allow marking, the Sony etc. can't do it, too.

If you need the device now, buy it NOW! Simple as that. I waited far too long to buy it and I paid a whopping 1300,- Euro incl. express shipping from the US at a time when it was NOT available via BHV. And I still don't regret it.

Only issue: The front bezel of the device shows signs of use after ~ 1 year of usage.

I have some PDF's that I'm fairly certain are scanned. You can tell from the fact that the font is inconsistent, e.g. all 'e' letters don't look the same but there is slight variation (that I don't think is attributable to smoothing, scaling etc.). There are also random artifacts on the pages that are clearly graphics and not text, which further hints of being scanned. I can however highlight this apparently scanned text, which made me suspect the Sony's PDF reader software has OCR. I don't think I've yet found a document on which I couldn't highlight text on the Sony, but I'd be curious to know how the behavior is determined.

It's likely that the PDF has the OCR text already embedded within it as a hidden layer. Some scanned PDFs are made that way to make them searchable. I would be surprised if the Sony does the OCR itself, since that is very time and power consuming.

I Agree with you on that point – I scan a lot of PDFs and it takes time to "add" the OCR layer in a self-scanned picture based PDF. Just convert any jpeg-text-file to PDF and see if sony can highlight the text. I am pretty sure that is not possible. However with acrobat pro (or other software) you can scan the picture-based PDFs and so add the OCR layer.

I didn't know this was possible. It's a much more plausible explanation.

My head is spinning, I read almost all of this thread, trying to avoid the repeats and banter. Not sure if I missed this or not. I got my device a couple of weeks ago and was wondering about charging it. When I charge it on a computer it seems fine, but if I use my wall charger at the office I end up having to reset the device every time I charge it. I have tried turning it off, but as soon as I plug it in, it goes to the welcome screen, then hangs. It will charge the battery, but reseting every time is silly.

I will also say that I do not have the original cable or charger, not sure what I did with them, so I may have to try and see if they make a difference. This thread is a great reference, but it is a bit too long to truly help people out easily, maybe a mod could split it up a bit? Maybe by 2014, 2015, 2016? Or just go through and delete the fluff, because there is a bunch.

@Strouty, sterling effort reading the whole thread! Might wanna try search next time (or maybe you can't if you're a new user. They have that stupid rule on some forums, not sure about this one).

Can you try another wall charger and cable? The reader should charge correctly off any usb device but if it's one of these new high power chargers you could have issues. This is speculation though as the DPT is new enough that it should support higher amp chargers. Cables and chargers can easily become faulty though. I've just thrown a cable away myself that stopped working.

If that doesn't work then you might have a faulty device, especially if the charger is working with other similar devices (like another e-reader).
