Even if the Airplane mode is on before downgrading, it becomes off after. Should we turn it on again immediately after downgrading to avoid OTA update?

Seems like a good idea.

Or you could keep starting over with the process each time the device OTA updated on you.

It should be obvious without a note that you don't want any competition for which firmware version the device is running during the process.

In fact, it was this issue of the device receiving an OTA update during the process that added the big, black, header: "for experienced ... users only".
"experienced users" == people who know the device can OTA update at any time.

Why you see some obvious things mentioned and others not:

For instance you find a "be sure battery is charged" -
because if otherwise, the Kindle hardware might be damaged.

For instance you do not find a "keep Kindle off-line" -
because if otherwise, the person only has to start over with the procedure.

Humans are hard to program but they mostly learn pretty fast.
A person will only try these directions a few times before they figure out the Kindle should not be allowed to connect to the Internet.

Unfriendly? Perhaps.
But we can't hold everybody's hand for every possible special condition, the directions would take many pages.

If you do not have the kindle in hand, do not attempt jailbreak until you can see the exact device and which firmware it is on.

Or in other words, do not try a remote jailbreak.

Kindle rolls out the 5.8.2 update, if I update to the new FW, can I keep my Kindle jailbreak?

PS: I know this thread said

Amazon can not tell during the OTA update process if any of the contents of /var/local is protected by Title 18 U.S. Code section 1030.

knc1 I suspect that Amazon doesn't care much. It's likely that also the downgrade and the update block still work but one better waits some weeks before updating or asks. I'll update to 581 in some days.

The jailbreak has survived every other update.
Now the person will need to reinstall the hacks.

I do believe the person that spent many days actually working on the jailbreak knows what he is talking about.

The method used to bridge and preserve the jailbreak is contained in Amazon code specifically marked "don't delete this". It is a special file located in the rootfs (/var/local/ partition) which is designated for emergency repairs, and since the only way to create that file is to already be jailbroken, Amazon is not going to the effort of nuclear war on the jailbreak.

Amazon != Apple.
They will secure their software to a certain extent, but they are not freakishly obsessed with destroying jailbreaks.

tl;dr

Assume the jailbreak will survive all future updates ever, no matter what. History says that is an accurate assessment.

I did update my already jailbroken KOA from 5.8.1 to 5.8.2 last night. I can confirm that the jailbreak survived.
