Thanks. Either UK, GB or Scotland is fine with me. But it's rather annoying when Americans substitute "England" for the UK.

Yeah, I get upset when people say "American" instead of "Wisconsonite", too. The latter is much more elegant, if you ask me.

On second thought, a world-wide poll might better be organized by time zone. Then you could see the wave on the graph as people came to life on the interwebs.

I would never substitute England for the UK or vice-versa.

When you say "Great Britain" exactly which countries are you referring to?

Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. Came into existence sometime in the early 1700s, and was then superceded by The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - or United Kingdom, or UK, for short. That came into being in the early 1800s.

I could google and the exact dates...

As an aside, Ireland is technically two countries as Northern Ireland is part of the UK and the Republic of Ireland/Eire is a completely politically (although obviously not physcially) separate country. Many people confusingly tend to use Ireland to refer the Republic of Ireland as well as the island...

Northern Ireland's part of the United Kingdom (Great Britain is just the three countries that are physically joined together), and has been for a couple hundred years.
