Mark Bittman's International Cookbook--HUGE, Very Highly Rated, and Only $1.99!

That's an impressive 88% off of the digital list price.

Traveling the world . . . eating the cuisine . . . sounds like good work, when you can get it. And, it was probably all tax-deductible (being research for the book, you know). ha

The Best Recipes in the World. By Mark Bittman. Rated 4.5 stars, from 77 reviews at the present moment at Amazon. Print list price N/A; digital list price $15.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Clarkson Potter, publisher. 768 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Recipes-.../dp/B000SEIJ92.

Book Description
The author of How to Cook Everything takes you on the culinary trip of a lifetime, featuring fifty-two international menus.

Mark Bittman traveled the world to find and bring back the best recipes of home cooks from 44 countries. This bountiful collection of new, easy, and ultra-flavorful dishes will add exciting new tastes and cosmopolitan flair to your everyday cooking and entertaining.

With his million-copy bestseller
How to Cook Everything, Mark Bittman made the difficult doable. Now he makes the exotic accessible.

In this highly ambitious, accomplished, globe-spanning work, Bittman gathers the best recipes that people from dozens of countries around the world cook every day. And when he brings his distinctive no-frills approach to dishes that were once considered esoteric, America's home cooks will eagerly follow where they once feared to tread.

In more than a thousand recipes, Bittman compellingly demonstrates that there are many places besides Italy and France to which cooks can turn for inspiration. In addition to these favorites, he covers Spain, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Scandinavia, the Balkans, Germany, and other European destinations, giving us easy ways to make dishes like Spanish Mushroom and Chicken Paella, Greek Roast Leg of Lamb with Thyme and Orange, Russian Borscht, and Swedish Appletorte.

Asian food now rivals European cuisine’s popularity, and this book reflects that: It’s the first to emphasize European and Asian cuisines equally, with easy-to-follow recipes for favorites like Vietnamese Stir-Fried Vegetables with Nam Pla, Pad Thai, Japanese Salmon Teriyaki, Chinese Black Bean and Garlic Spareribs, and Indian Tandoori Chicken. Nor is the rest of the world ignored: there are hundreds of recipes from North Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America, too. All will be hits with home cooks looking to add exciting new tastes and cosmopolitan flair to their everyday repertoire.

Shop locally, cook globally–Mark Bittman makes it so easy:
• Hundreds of recipes that can be made ahead or prepared in under 30 minutes
• Informative sidebars and instructional drawings explain unfamiliar techniques and ingredients
• An extensive International Pantry section and much more make this an essential addition to any cook’s shelf

The Best Recipes in the World is destined to be a classic that will change the way Americans think about everyday food. It’s simply like no other cookbook in the world.

The Price for the Physical Book is $40, but You Can Get the Kindle Mobi for $2.

I had never heard of this cookbook before; I had never heard of Mustards Grill before (yes, I have heard of Napa Valley. ha). But after seeing the stunning ratings (4.9 star average) and noticing the huge markdown (90% from the digital list price), this was a must-buy for me.

Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook. By Cindy Pawlcyn; Brigid Callinan. Professionally photographed. Rated 4.9 stars, from 30 reviews at Amazon. Print list price $39.99; digital list price $19.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Ten Speed Press. 288 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Mustards-Gril.../dp/B007QPEDCI.

Book Description
As anyone who has spent time in Napa Valley knows, Mustards Grill is an institution in the wine country—the friendly restaurant where locals first started going for a full plate of fabulous food and a glass of Napa's finest. Chef-owner Cindy Pawlcyn, founding chef of San Francisco's original Fog City Diner, put down her roots in Napa over 15 years ago, bringing her midwestern sensibility and flair for reinventing American food to the valley. Ever since then, Mustards has been affectionately known as the fancy rib joint with way, way too many wines.

Gorgeous full-color food photography from Saveur photographer Laurie Smith.

Awards: 2002 James Beard Award Winner

"Mustards is universally loved by local residents and tourists alike for its smoky, tender, spicy baby back ribs; cornmeal-coated fried green tomatoes; tasty Asian-marinated flank steak; Chinese chicken noodle salad; and, of course, Mustards' always-crisp tangle of deep-fried onion threads. The enduring vitality of this place comes from the fact [that Cindy Pawlcyn] put all the dishes she loved on the menu: country dishes transformed by her sprightly offbeat style and sparkle."

—FOOD LOVER'S GUIDE TO SAN FRANCISCO

Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook. By Cindy Pawlcyn
I'm on the fence to get it, but have heard of Mustards Grill. A lot of the celebrity/restaurant books often seem to end up with either recipes I'd never make or quantities that are difficult to cope with for a single family. But this one does have "cornmeal-coated fried green tomatoes", so it might be worth $2 of browsing thru.

When in doubt about buying a book, one can sometimes borrow it from the public library. This cookbook has conveniently been published both in print and ebook formats:

Sadly, not at any of the three libraries I belong to and ICK! on borrowing a cookbook, these days.

Well, most print books, for that matter. Smoke smell, food (one hopes) stains, etc.

Good point. I didn't read any of the reviews this time before purchasing, but relied simply on the 4.9-star rating.

I didn't check the GoodReads ratings beforehand, either, but they have 4.13 (47) for one edition, and 4.27 (11) for the other. Both outstanding ratings, coming from the less charitable (than Amazon raters) GoodReads crowd. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

In my part of the south, the only kind of fried green tomato is cornmeal-coated. ha

It's been quite a few months now since I heard the report, but there is (or at least was then) a move on to enable libraries to do interlibrary loans of digital books. That day can't come too soon for me.

I haven't been in many public libraries lately but my own, but the books at my library have the same issues that you mentioned. I thought that it was just because our library system is so way underfunded. Maybe the problem of books being in such poor condition is much more extensive . . . .
