Is it crazy to buy a DX (non-Graphite) in 2016?

I have the opportunity to buy one for $60 on my local Craigslist. I don't read comics or anything of that sort; just books and assorted PDFs (leaving science to go to law school, so we'll see what sort of PDFs it'll be. Likely a mix of both).

Will the DX be okay, at least for another year? Is it even worth the cash?

One thing that could be a problem is the battery. Because it's so old, the battery could not hold a charge for very long.

Thanks. The seller told me it's "normal" but of course there's no easy way to test that in a quick Craigslist interaction. May need to take her word for it...

I think $60 is fine for a DX - IF YOU FEEL YOU CAN TRUST THE SELLER. You may still need to buy a battery, however. They're not that expensive and are quite easy (I understand) to install.

You should also inquire about the cosmetic condition.

You will also need to assess your tolerance level concerning the absence of a front light (in these devices). If you can't function without one, then you should stay away from it - in my opinion.

I own a DX-G, but it is having some electronic or circuity issues, but it's still quite usable (under most conditions) and very enjoyable.

Definitely could be getting weak compared to when new, but probably still good for days of use at a time (at least my old K2's from the same era is). For $60 I'd say go for it (check to make sure it's not blacklisted when you pick it up).

Luckily it's one of the easier reader batteries to change out if the battery turns out to be a problem...

Yes, I would too. I have a DX but I'd buy another one at that price. Oh, and I have replaced the battery in my DX - well, my husband has - and it's very straightforward. It is odd to me not to have the front light since I also read so much on my PW3, but I just clip on a book light and it's fine.

The problem with the DX is the screen size. It's too large to get an even enough light from a booklight.

If you read in bed, I suggest an Ikea JANSJÖ. I have one on my headboard and it works very well.

Well... Appreciate the kind words. Despite the fact that she's had it listed on Craigslist for 3 months, she told me she wanted $150, not $60... not sure how we made that jump so fast, but I'll keep looking....

If you really need something for PDF you might be better off with a 10" tablet. That's not nearly as good for reading books but it's a lot better for PDF. Also it'll cost a lot more than $60 but if you can manage it it might be worth it.

I bought a Lenovo full HD 10" tablet from Amazon for $160 8 or 9 months ago. They still have it at the same price. This would be as good as you can get for PDF with it's high pixel density and 10" screen. It's been a really nice tablet. The only problem has been a somewhat flakey Wifi but it's only a problem occasionally. Otherwise it's been great. Here's a link to it:

You would have to worry about the battery and, judging by my experiences, the usb port.

It's hard to find alternative devices with a large non-touch non-painfully-bright screen, and with buttons. I have tried tablets and haven't found any I can use.
