Is there any reason it has to be a Fire? You can download directly from your library using the Audible app on any tablet.

If it had a front light, it would be akin to a PW2.

Just something to remember if contemplating a Fire for audiobooks. A Fire will only work for audible accounts connected to an Amazon account. If someone has multiple audible accounts (I have four, 3 UK and 1 US) only one Audible account can be registered to a Amazon account.
I use an android tablet for all my audiobooks, I download them to my Pc and sideload them into the audible app. That way I use the app to listen to all audiobooks regardless of the account they were purchased on. The only thing I lose is auto syncing to another device. |

My white Kindle (8th gen) will be here Friday. Wasn't expecting it for another week or so. Looking forward to trying the Bluetooth audio for VoiceView. With any luck it will also have improved Page Flip and Note Export, which I'm still waiting for on my other otherwise 'eligible' Kindles. We'll see if I'm serious about it replacing my Paperwhite 3 (text is not as sharp and dark as on my Kindle 7th gen, sometimes it bothers me).
As far as Audible devices go, you can get unlocked smartphones for less than $50. Amazon is starting to offer Android phones 'with lockscreen offers' for $50 off price to Prime members in the US. That makes one of them ('BLU' something or other) $50, has dual-SIM and external SD slot. The other one (Moto G4, just released, 'full HD' screen, 13MP camera) starts at $150. I would not say those are even exceptional deals, but they are probably 'safe' buys. I'm a little tempted, getting a little tired of my Fire Phone's glitches and lack of a decent app store. I almost never listen to audiobooks on a tablet; they are not portable enough. Last edited by tomsem; 07-06-2016 at 04:58 PM. |

Nope. But the higher resolution is not as important when you don't have backlighting, IMHO. The Kindle Keyboard, for instance, has a thicker, darker font which makes reading quite easy. But, I have a good reading light. The Voyage uses thinner weight text, so the higher resolution is definitely needed with the backlighting.

My new Basic Kindle arrived today. I bought one in white. It's as advertised. I'm happy with it. I tested the Bluetooth reading option and the voice is the same quality as the one on my Kindle HDX, so that is excellent (I have days where I am unable to read, so I use TTS then).
It definitely feels lighter than my old 6" basic kindle (5th generation). I'm still debating whether to get the magnetic cover for it or not. Those aren't even available until next week. For those of you who don't know, the basic kindle does not have its own light. As a result, they can use a lower DPI and it looks and reads GREAT! Once you add an internal light, you need the higher DPI or it washes out. I still wish that they could add ONE more size slightly smaller than the top 2 type sizes. You go from big to huge in one step and I really need it a bit in between. Last edited by Tarana; 07-08-2016 at 12:32 AM. |

I sold my 7th Generation Kindle Basic on eBay a week ago -- so, in a few months I may be in the market for one of the 8th Generation models. I don't know for sure. I still like my Touches a lot, especially with the Constantia font (darker than the others). I installed Bookerly, but it's too light for my tastes on the Touch. I'm rambling. That Blue Tooth feature sounds nice. |

Finally, my Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 has arrived. I'll use it and share my experience soon.

Observations....
So I've almost completely filled my new white Kindle Basic, and spent about 5 hours reading on it today. It's very light & comfortable to hold, and as an ereader it works as advertised (caveat - I haven't used the BT function, so can't comment on it). But what jumps out at me is how sluggish it is in its processing.
