I redid the whole jailbreak again after realizing I forgot to reset my device to prep.

Second time: Jailbroke v5.5 firmware, installed the Screensaver Hack, verified with Special Screensaver in sleep mode.

I manually updated to latest v5.8.1, the Screensaver Hack seems to stop working. Seeing default screensavers in sleep mode.

Tried to reinstall the Screensaver Hack but files copied to root/ are automatically being deleted upon eject.

Tried to install KUAL by copying the relevant file to documents/ folder. But don't see KUAL in home screen.

I just reset my KV and am going to try the whole process again.

USB eject deletes installer files on root. You must put them in the mrpi folder as instructed in the readme file.

Lord, keep my hands away from the keyboard.

It is almost a requirement that everything must be re-installed after an Amazon firmware upgrade.
There are a few exceptions, but you are safest to just re-install anything that is not working after the update.

The update_*.bin packages you are re-installing should be placed in the /mrpackages directory.
You may place all of them in that directory at the same time.

Then trigger MrPI from its KUAL menu.

Hi guys, I downgraded to 5.7.4 and installed Branch Delay's jb, but now I'm stuck on Step 6.

Quote:
6. Download and install the current 'hotfix'

I extracted Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin (MD5: 5e749f09dfa8bb6739c8456a97102821) from NiLuJe's latest snapshot kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N-r13356.tar.xz and copied it to the KOA.

I removed USB cable, didn't get any error, but the Update Your Kindle button was greyed out. When I plugged in USB again, the .bin had been deleted. Tried it again, same result.

Wondering do I have the right .bin?

Is your model listed here? Kindle Serial Numbers

If not, we need the first 6 digits so NiLuJe can add support to KindleTool for your model.

Yes, it's the G0B0GU, NiLuJe added support a few hours ago but the .bin doesn't seem to work on my KOA, or I'm doing something wrong. Followed the instructions carefully.

I'll PM him.

The current hotfix is more than a few hours old. So wait for NiLuJe to push an updated hotfix.

Edit: also, sorry, yeah, you need the hotfix not the bridge.

Thank you!

This is only my second time jailbreaking and I mistakenly thought the jailbreak PLUS hacks installed will persist after a firmware update. So it's only the jailbreak that persists.

(Also coming from Android rooting/flashing experience, the apps installed usually persist after a dirty flash.)

I got as far as rooting, and getting the Screensaver Hack to work on v5.5. But KUAL on the homescreen doesn't run when I click on it.

Will try updating to v8.5.1 and figure things out.

@beic: Yeah, the docs haven't been pushed yet, and I forgot to explain that bit in my PM, sorry.

As @eschwartz said, you need the *_hotfix*.bin from the snapshot's JB package (which now contains *both* a legacy *_bridge_*.bin and the "new" *_hotfix_*).

The name has changed to avoid confusion, but I haven't updated the old hotfix attachment yet (because the doc isn't up to date yet).

@all: Don't mind this, it'll get cleared up once we confirm everything's working as intended.

@vurt: Switch to the actual local (non-cloud) library view (and/or Active Content filtering, if that's still a thing). You'll never see KUAL on the Homescreen with FW >= 5.7 fancy schmancy's new homescreen. You will see it in your library, though.

OK, I installed the hotfix and then installed the latest firmware. I think it's jailbroken now!

At least, when I type ;log mrpi into the search bar, it says MRPI is not installed. So I assume this means it's jailbroken?

Now to figure out how to install MRPI.

Thanks for sorting that out so quickly, NiLuJe

@beic: Yay! Yep, that's good news.

So, yeah, just *imagine* you could use KUAL and follow the instructions to install MRPI (basically unpack an archive and you're done. Note that, again, you'll have to use the one from the snapshots), and once that's done you should at least be able to install stuff now .

FWIW, most of my stuff is perfectly usable without KUAL, the only thing that relies on slightly more complex user-interaction through KUAL is the Fonts hack.

Hopefully we'll figure out something to get KUAL or a KUAL-ish thing to work, but in the mean time, that's the basics .

Thank you so much for your patience. I did finally find KUAL when I randomly clicked on "Downloaded" in Homescreen.

I put the python and screensaver updates into the package folder and got it running, success!

@vurt: FWIW, your original question was perfectly fine. That's something we ought to mention in the KUAL doc, you're not the first one to have been bitten by that ("that" being Amazon slowly fading out Active Content) .

That means two things:
You installed the (newest) hot fix - which includes the searchbar command.
Your jailbreak is working, because you where able to install the hot fix.

Your ready to upgrade -
both the jail break and the new searchbar access to MrPI should survive the upgrade (if you watch the screen you should see: bridging ...) right after the upgrade's re-boot.
