50SUN doesn't seem to work in the UK, alas. Lucky Canada!

Kobo Canada has put up another 3 for 2 sale promotion, this time for "Take a Break with Cozy British Fiction", apparently all from UK publisher Head of Zeus, until July 31st.

The regular prices start high, at $8 CAD and above, but all the books are couponable with the 50SUN 50% discount code anyway, if you happen to spot something you might like while it lasts. They do have some interesting-looking medieval British history in the non-fiction section, and there's a YA fantasy trilogy apparently co-written by actor John Barrowman of Torchwood fame.

Main promo page and categories: Historical Fiction, Mysteries & Thrillers, Discover the Heartwarming Fiction of Amanda Prowse, Perfect Rainy Day Reads, Biographies, History & General Non-Fiction

There is also a non-couponable Thriller Fest! Bestselling thrillers at $2.99 & under until July 18, with titles from the standard large North American publishers, but quite frankly a lot of them seem to be cheaper at Google Play for $1.99 for the ones I spot-checked.

My library has changed again. Took me a little bit, but I found the 3 dots that you click on that offers the option of exporting the file.

What changes? I can't see anything that hasn't been there for a few weeks. Well, except the fact it has decided I speak French. Everything else seems to be English, so I don't know what's happening.

Edit: Signed out and back in and it's OK again.

For me, the new library's default sort is now by title, instead of by purchase date. And I don't see any option to sort by date. So I've been using the old library in order to download my new purchases without a search.

I've had to do that, do. Kobo is obviously trying to promote a straight-to-the-device mentality, in essence tying people to its own garden emotionally, if not in fact. It'll be a nuisance if they get rid of the old library view.

For some reason, that sometimes happens on Kobo links, but usually trying again later fixes it.

I just tried it and it's working from Canada, and from a US-set account, but not a UK one, which ISTR you have?

In any case, the titles which the opening blurb mentions have some sort of accolade include: Paradise Sky by Joe R. Lansdale (Library Journal Best Book of 2015); Angel Baby by Richard Lange (Dashiel Hammett Award-winning book); The Killing Kind by Chris Holm (Boston Globe's Best Book of 2015; nominated for both Anthony & Lefty Awards); Whisky Tango Foxtrot by David Shafer (Best Books list for Time Magazine, NPR, Slate, and Kirkus; Pacific Northwest Book Award shortlist); Canary by Dwayne Swierczynski (Edgar nominee); Crooked by Austin Grossman (author has won unspecified award; blurb mentions that this is a Cold War occult thriller, which actually looks interesting to me if it's anything like Charles Stross' or Tim Powers' fantasy novels about that. ETA: it turns out that the anti-hero and narrator of this is Richard Nixon. Now I'm morbidly curious, maybe even enough to get it for $2.99.).

It looks to be all recent stuff printed within the last couple of years from Little, Brown Company's Mulholland Books imprint, about two pages' worth, and includes titles by well-known authors like Lawrence Block, Marcia Clark (the O. J. Simpson case prosecutor, IIRC), Lauren Beukes, Anthony Horowitz (another Holmes continuation novel), a Japanese novel in translation, and something with an introduction by Stephen King.

I think this publisher sorted by price list should bring it up even if the direct promo link doesn't work, starting on page 3 @ $2.99 (though as I mentioned, a few of the books seem to be $1.99 elsewhere, but I guess that's what the Price Match Guarantee is for).

Last edited by ATDrake; 07-09-2016 at 11:37 AM. Reason: Direct linkage for selected titles.

A straight-to-the-device mentality doesn't work well if you don't have a Kobo device. That would be a rather stupid move on their part.

I thought that according to their website they won't do that, but re-reading it looks like they are saying they want their devices to be used with content purchased anywhere. So they want you to buy their devices and not their content? And if you don't have a Kobo device don't buy Kobo content?

I'd be curious to know what percentage of Kobo's sales are to people without Kobo devices. Maybe the market of people that buy the way I do (and I expect the way most MobileReaders do) isn't much more than a blip in the numbers.

I have the exact same computer/browser setup as you, and I think the problem in this case is that those particular editions of the books just don't exist in the UK (Mulholland Books is a Hodder & Stoughton imprint in the UK, via their Hachette parent company, and some of the titles are out from Penguin UK instead), and so Kobo's promotion list URL which auto-searches for them can't find anything and spits up an error message instead of the usual no-listings blank when that happens.

Sorry about that. Here's a copy-paste of what's on sale, which seems to be valid across multiple CA/US retailers, if you or anyone else browsing from outside North America think there might have been something of particular interest (blurbs left in since I can't see a way to get Kobo to switch to just author/title on the display and it's too much effort to try and edit them out):

I would think that people who have an epub device would buy at a different store at a higher rate than Kindle owners. The epub devices use ADE, and if you have a device without wireless you would be used to downloading to the computer and then sideloading to your device already. But you are probably correct that the number is small.
