I'm all for KISS, and when that came up during @BD's 5.6.5 JB dev, we agreed that since the only "stable" thing was the public key, it was best to just stick to that in the first place.

Everything else, hotfix included, is subject to code changes (for whatever reason, although it's usually device support).

I would like to say thank you, thank you, thank you to you all!

A couple of days ago I was successful in jailbreaking my Kindle Voyage. The Voyage was at 5.8.1. I downgraded, installed the jailbreak, and installed hotfix; then upgraded back up to 5.8.1. I now have KUAL, kpvbooklet and KOReader running on the Voyage and it is fantastic!

Today I was also successful in jailbreaking my Kindle Oasis. The only difference in the instructions in the first post of this thread was in the instruction about preparing the device was to Reset first. With the Oasis, I started with 5.8.1; I reset device (then had to register again), device still at 5.8.1. Installed the downgrade 5.7.4, installed the jailbreak; installed the hotfix update successfully. KUAL does not yet work. It says "Application Error. The selected application could not be started. Please try again." I understand that it is expected at this time and an update to KUAL may be forthcoming if I read correctly. I have not yet upgraded the Oasis back to 5.8.1 so it is still on the 5.7.4.

I do appreciate all of your hard work in providing these tools. Thank you so much!

@NiLuJe, @geekmaster,

While KISS is definitely important, a bit of user feedback so people know for sure that it worked is still good to have.

I will have to review the various injection points known here, since by the time I really got involved here, yossarian17's poison filename obsoleted a bunch of stuff, but I am sure we can whip together something a bit more user-friendly than a silently-installed "test things and see if their behavior matches your expectations".

If you can, keep it on 5.7.4 - -
We may need to test changes to KUAL on Oasis-5.7.4 vs Oasis-5.8.1

Amazon has been saying it was dropping support for Active Content documents - it could be that Oasis is the point of change.

One way to tell might be to check the Kindle Store for any Active Content documents for Oasis -
Usually any game or other interactive application may be an Active Content document, some are (or used to be) free.

Translation:
If the Amazon Store is still selling Active Content things for the Oasis, we know we can make KUAL work again.

I'll try to whip that up tonight or tomorrow (currently on the last stages of testing that everything works for the KOA/KT3 update).

As lady luck would have it, the current jailbreak is pinned on r13337...

Although if we want something pretty to brag about on hackaday, we *could* always try for a framebuffer $something.

Yes, knc1, I will definitely leave the Oasis on 5.7.4 for now. I keep Airplane Mode On as I only sideload books.

The reason I installed the jailbreak on the Oasis was to use KUAL and KOReader. These are great on the Voyage. Hope they will work sometime in the future on the Oasis as well.

Let me know how I can help. I'm pretty technical-minded (though definitely not as much as you all here in the developer's community), but I can follow instructions pretty well.

I've never used Active Content on a Kindle before, at least I don't think have; I only read books on it.

@homeceo43: The snapshots (which include a KUAL snapshot) have been updated. Let me know how this goes.

If it still fails, I'll be interested in a system log right after the failure (;dm in the searchbar, in the same vein as the factory JB).

Any pointers to how to check if a jailbreak/has taken?

I've got a KV that seemed to go through the various steps[*] as expected, but when I add the KUAL doc/app I get a message to the effect of (sorry, away from the kindle at the moment) 'selected application is invalid'. I note that after a restart, I do have a /developer folder though.
[*] I.e factory reset, update using factory image to 5.5.0, ';installHtml' & Update bridge.

Did you change the device's registration?
Did you stay on 5.5.0-factory or did you update to one of Amazon's consumer firmwares?

Other context that you can think of please.

Prior to starting, it was normally registered, but the reset/reflash seems to have unregistered it - it's still on 5.5.0 as I wanted to check things before updating to a more recent firmware. It's a WiFi only KV and I've not reconnected it since it was reset.
