That is what prompted its completion and release.

Yep .

According to my notes, that started with FW 5.5.x, meaning the Voyage, which came out in fall 2014, and my initial MRPI commit is dated Nov 15, 2014, so that tracks .

Is there a way to get the screensaver working again after a kindle update using KUAL? I downloaded and reinstalled the screensaver hack and it works but it would be nice to fix it without using a computer.

Ah ...
"Make the screensaver hack bridge a Kindle update, like the other things are bridged."

Did I paraphrase that correctly?

Technically it might be possible, but more likely there is not enough room in /var/local (the hidden, user's data area) to do so reliably.

It would need a step to transfer screensaver images off then back onto the kindle over USB. Perhaps the hack itself could be bridged.

Actually I am pretty sure the screensavers hack is mostly self-contained, except for an upstart script.

But really, the bridge could be expanded to hook into some sort of central location for things-that-should-be-restored-after-an-update.
The real question is, *should* everything without exception be bridged, or just the basic jailbreaking infrastructure?

Convenience v. necessity. The younger generation will gladly trade freedon for convenience, as seen in acceptance of draconian TOS these days. Selling your valuable metadata for mere convenience seems like everything should be bridged. I suppose we could have an age-based bridging system that bridges more for lower user ages and less for old-fogeys?

I hate to ask noob questions, but now that I have my KV jailbroken, I really want to use the font and screensaver hack. Do they or will they work on 5.8.1?

thanks again to all the developers!

It is still a little bit early for an answer to that one.
We need a bit of time to fix everyone's Kindle that we have broken the past few days first.

Got it. I'll spend the time enjoying playing interactive fiction on my KV.

AFAIK, people have been successfully running both hacks on fw5.8.1 devices already, via the serial port / BD / legacy jailbreaks.

What is new, is that many more people are getting jailbroken now that we have a current software jailbreak.
So we will hear of a lot more people attempting to run hacks on that firmware.

...

Try it, it should work.

@byzkarl: The ScreenSavers hack should be perfectly safe.

The Fonts hack might be trickier, but it *should* be okay, provided you're using the snapshot version (which you should be doing for everything, actually).

@Mendelson: Put the install packages you want to restore in the mrinstaller folder beforehand, and just run MRPI after your update?

I took a deep breath and tried it. Now I have a BW pic of my family as the screensaver and am using the Literata font.

Thanks again!

Hi, I've successfully jailbroke PW2, installed KUAL and upgraded to 5.8.1. It seemed to work on the beginning (at least once), but then it stopped working (the screen LED's simply turn off) after that I've been trying to find a way to make it work and for now the only thing that's bringing it back temporarily (just for turning it off once, then it breaks again) is the KUAL button 'Reset to defualt behaviour' and 'Clear personal info cache' and subsequent menu->settings->reset.

Can anyone help me with this? I can't find any log files nor error messages coming from linkss.
