Use the MRPI (Mobileread Package Installer) KUAL extension. The Greyed Installer (also a KUAL extension) might also work.

@GM: Depending on which step he's on in his jailbreaking adventures, there might be a catch-22 issue at play with that solution
![]() @Staphoent: Double-check that you're doing the right thing. You should at worst get an annoying popup nagging you about an incompatible update file or some such. Nothing at all means either you're doing it wrong, or something seriously wonky is going on with your device. That wouldn't be a *white* PW3, by chance? (Don't think those are out yet, but, you never know...). |

The jailbreak 'hotfix' package is a requirement of running KUAL/MrPI - so it **must** be installed before KUAL can be used. @Staphoent: Please post the first six characters of your device's serial number (so we can check the encoded model info). |

G0 90G1 is the first PW-3 model released, it is supported.
Has to be a local problem. Recheck everything local, suspect any file transfer program being used as not respecting the nature of a binary file. Suspect any other possible source of PEBKAC. Start by downloading the 'hotfix' package from the attachment to the software jailbreak's initial post, not here. Use only known good file download program, ensure its set to 'binary transfer', not to 'text' or 'auto'. Same precautions when transferring the package to your Kindle. Do not skip the "eject or safely remove" step before removing the USB cable (YES - remove the USB cable). The chance that it has worked for thousands of people and not for yourself is less than zero, the problem is at your end, re-check everything. |

Hi all, firstly: thanks knc1 and GM for your help with this (and from the other thread).
I seem to be having the same issue as Staphoent: Downgraded successfully, install BD's jailbreak (ran the command and the screen "flashed and the device rebooted" which, from the README, seems to indicate the device was successfully jailbroken. However the hot fix doesn't seem to work - like Staphoent states the update option is greyed out. I'm busy going through knc1's steps on ensuring a proper download right now but I thought I'd post just to let you know Staphoent may not be the only one experiencing this. FWIW my serial number is B0D622 |

Is that one of the early, 2Gbyte storage, models?
Check and report the current firmware version shown in device info - include the build ID: (number). Re-download the 'hotfix' from its release post in this thread, it was updated for another problem yesterday. Try with the most current one. I also re-wrote the directions in the DGA-1 thread, see if you can spot something that might be the cause (and reply in that thread if so). |

@Wooks: You're on a PW2, now running FW 5.4.3.2. You don't need the hotfix, you can simply follow the "old", full JB instructions (the one from the hotfix thread)
![]() (The hotfix is here for the range of FW unsupported by the old JB). That's a good point that we may have overlooked (haven't checked, I think it was in there at one point) in the docs though, so, thanks ![]() |

Yes, it was in version 1 -
I took out the optional, special handling, of the PW-2 case to stream line the instructions. I probably should put a 'PW-2 spoiler' in there, because the factory firmware is old enough for the old(er) "Universial Jailbreak". Ah, since this is the USBnetworking thread - Should we mention that the factory initial firmware has USBnetworking pre-installed? ![]() |

@NiLuJe thanks so much. So... if I have this right, my PW2 is now properly jailbroken? (I did the one from pg 1 of the hotfix thread)
My (very limited lol) understanding was that the hotfix somehow prevented future updates from removing the jailbreak. Is that right? Put another way: if my device is jailbroken as per those "full" instructions (i.e. it stated **** JAILBREAK ****) am I able to update to the Kindle's current firmware whilst retaining the jailbreak? I thought I had done that before and I ended up losing my jailbreak so I just want to make sure I'm not forgetting a step here... Thanks again for all your help. |

Give NiLuJe a chance to fix it. Just set your Kindle aside (or explore the factory features) - NiLuJe has to re-build the KindleTool before he can update any packages for your model. I'll fix step #2 to cover this case. Edit: Fixed by moving #2 -> #1 and adding a warning. See: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=275877 Last edited by knc1; 07-06-2016 at 12:05 AM. |

@NiLuJe, @knc1 Sorry for bothering you fine folks again but just wanted to double check that if I'm jailbroken via

Again, sorry if this is an obvious question - I'm quite new to this and if I google (even within mobile read's forums) "upgrade without losing jailbreak" I can't find a straight answer (all hits seems to focus on the jailbreak portion only). |
