Okay then. A squidge (or guitar pick) and a jewelers screwdriver (phillips, small), and perhaps a low wattage soldering iron (700F) and fine rosin core solder (60/40 lead/tin is easiest to use). Or pins, tape, whatever if solder is not your style. Look at a teardown so you do not break fasteners or damage eink cables. That link posted earlier, read it and do it.
We are not being arrogant -- just too much politico-speak around these parts lately, and your elusive posts fit that profile. It makes us "squirrelly", in a geeky way. Last edited by geekmaster; 06-21-2016 at 10:49 PM. |

When the answers to vague questions are already contained in the 'sticky threads' (in some cases here, even in their titles) - -
Those questions are 'fair game' for any sort of response that comes to mind. Actually, we are being relatively 'nice' in this case, compared to accepted Internet practices: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-...s.html#answers |

Do you have a (detailed) tutorial for native downgrading of a Kindle Paperwhite 2 2GB that is already jailbroken (with current firmware 5.7.3)?
And how do I find out what was the original firmware it has shipped with? (I think it was either 5.4.5.1 or 5.4.4.2 or smth like that but not sure what, and wondering where I could confirm) Thanks in advance! Last edited by susmoka; 06-23-2016 at 02:19 PM. |

Extract the root filesystem image and kernel image from amazon firmware update version of your choice (using "kindletool"). Then boot to diags (with the "rescue pack" or "cowards rescue pack" method), then flash the main kernel and rootfs as described in the "Simple Debricking" thread, starting at the "diags" step, here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=170929 You can use a Kubrick boot CD (or bootable USB stick) to get a root shell where you can do this, if you have a windows PC. Or use whatever SSH tool your host OS supports. On windows, I use Putty for SSH. Last edited by geekmaster; 06-24-2016 at 09:15 AM. |

Check the source code listings for your device. Note: Amazon does not publish the **initial** firmware as an Update_*.bin file, you will have to be satisfied with the first update firmware version for your device. |

Details please?
I *HATE* it when I am googling a problem, and all I find is a list of "me too!" posts, and finally a "nevermind, I fixed it" with NO explanation of HOW it was fixed, so my problem remains unsolved. Your post will be read by folks in the future with similar problems, and they will be just as angry when they read your post after an exhausting search for an answer... Please give specific details so that somebody else with your problem can solve it after reading this thread. Thanks. |

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I had a demo kindle paperwhite (2013 edition) with 5.4.2 firmware on it. I typed ;uzb in the search bar to enable connecting to it over the computer. I then opened the official build folder and made a copy of the file called demo.bin. Then I put the demo.bin file on the root directory on my other kindle paperwhite. Then i updated my kindle by clicking menu, settings, menu, update you kindle and my kindle installed the 5.4.2 firmware on it. Hope it works for you.
Make sure to only use the demo.bin file on the kind of kindle you got it from. If you got it from a kindle paperwhite (2013 edition) make sure to only use it on a (2013 edition) otherwise it will brick your kindle. I tried it and bricked one of mine. |

Neat trick. I bet Lab126 never considered that route, which of course is why it works. This will be of interest to all owners of 5.x firmware touchscreen devices (all Paperwhites and newer models) that missed out on the firmware version 5.6.5 software jailbreak. For reference, here is the thread where I described some of the useful search bar commands in a typical 'demo' firmware install: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=269245 Further into that same thread, IFixKindles described using those commands to "Un-Demo" a Kindle, starting here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...29&postcount=6 Now what SKK has done above is the non-obvious route to downgrading a 5.x firmware Kindle - First, a requirement - Have access to a Kindle of the same model that is still running that model's "Demo" firmware - *) Use the commands to export the USB storage (normally disabled in the Demo firmware) *) Copy the (large) update file used to install the "Demo" firmware. Now it should be possible to setup a collection point for those update files at a site other than this one, perhaps one of our off-site 'de-bricking image' sites. That way, the above preparation step could be skipped by most users. On the Kindle (of the same model) that you want to downgrade, install the factory 'Demo mode' firmware. Yeah, right! Got that? It isn't something you would normally think of doing. Most people want to un-demo a Demo model, here we are taking 'consumer model' and turning it into a Demo model. Now that you have turned your 'normal' Kindle into a 'demo' Kindle, follow IFixKindle's procedure to un-demo it again, only to the desired (probably earlier firmware, most likely 5.6.5 that you can software jailbreak). Now that your 'normal' Kindle is once again running the 'normal' Kindle 5.6.5 firmware - Follow the directions in the first post of the software jailbreak thread. Note: That thread also has links/pointers to Amazon's 5.6.5 firmware packages for the models that the software jailbreak works on. Once you have 5.6.5 jailbroken (run both the jb AND the hotfix package) - You can once again update to one of the newer firmware versions for your model if desired, the jailbreak will survive. Note: You can get any prior firmware version from Amazon's download server - that how to is a FGA. Last edited by knc1; 07-05-2016 at 03:59 PM. |

I just copied the 5.6.5 firmware update to my (no jailbreak FW 5.7.4) PW2, and then I renamed it to demo.bin. As soon as I ejected the kindle, it got a popup saying "Update Error: An invalid update file has been loaded onto your device." So I really need some of those REAL demo.bin files to add to my shared "debricking image" collection. My PW2 still suffers from a woeful jailbreak deficiency.
