Finished The Last Coyote, which was good. Before going for the fifth book in this series, I will take up mystery ebook received today as gift, The Tenth Unknown, by Jvalant Nalin Sampat, his debut book. I am interested in this myth, because I had read The Nine Unknown by Talbot Mundy a few months back.

I'm rereading Stephen King's It. I first read it when I was thirteen or fourteen and since then I must have read it almost a dozen times. However, since I've got an ereader I haven't reread it.
I'm always slightly apprehensive about rereading an old time favourite, I don't want my pleasant memories of a book I enjoyed destroyed if I don't like the book anymore. But I'm loving It. It's a fast read, I started on Monday evening and even with a busy week I'm now 40% in. I still like the 1957/1958 parts better than the 1986 parts. I never really liked the ending, so I'm curious what I will make of it now. |

Just finished "Exiles at the Well of Souls", by Jack L. Chalker, which I bought from Baen in 2003. Excellent SF, and a worthy sequel to the classic "Midnight at the Well of Souls". Recommended.

Finished Deaths of Tao by Wesley Chu. It had better pace and more action than the first book in the series. Thoroughly enjoyed and looking forward to read the the third book. Don't want to spoil the but I thought that end was a little predictable but still enjoyable.

I'm in the mood for a reread this month... don't know yet whether it will be some Chalker (I reread the Well of Souls books a year or two ago), Stephen Donaldson, or maybe Rowling... I don't like the writing in the HP books, particularly the later ones (and the American translations hurt more), but the story itself is fairly solid. Hrm... I also want to reread some Cherryh; I'm a few volumes behind on the Foreigner series, and Cyteen is always fun. Good Lord, I think I just tripled my TBR with one post. ![]() |

An excellent continuation of the Wencit stories. The mysterious identity was a bit obvious, but a good yarn anyway. I'm looking forward to the next one, whenever it'll appear.
Next up: Grantville Gazette #66. The latest of the 1632 authorised fan-fic anthologies. |

Also read The Mouse on the Moon by Leonard Wibberley. Great fun, let down a little by the science. It would have been nice to have it a little more realistic. But that wasn't really the point of the book.
Also reading Three Faces of Asprin by Robert Asprin. Actually three of his books in an Omnibus. But since I counted it as one when I bought it, I'll count it as one when I read it! |

I'm currently splitting time between two short-story collections: Joe Abercrombie's Sharp Ends (short stories written in his First Law world), and Benjamin Percy's Refresh, Refresh.

I doubt I'm reading. Very much, anyway, as it seems like one of those periods in my life when everybody wants my attention every moment of the day. But I did manage to read a third of Something New by P.G. Wodehouse today, the MR Book Club's selection for July.

First, Murder in Primary Colors, first in the Dr. Christmas Connery Cozy Mysteries by Nora Barker. It was an interesting murder set in the art museum of a small midwestern (US) university. It took a little while to get going, but it was a fun, easy read and there were some nice touches. I'd give it between three and four stars. This is free at Smashwords (and, I imagine, the retailers that Smashwords distributes to), but it's $4.99 if you get it at Amazon. The second was The Avid Angler, first in the Hot Dog Detective series by Mathiya Adams. I really liked this one. It's a bit longer and more complicated than "Primary Colors" was. The protagonist is a former cop who left the force after his wife was murdered (still unsolved), he had a nervous breakdown, became an alcoholic and homeless in Denver. By the time the story opens he has been in AA and sober for some time and he is rejoining society by running a hot dog stand by the courthouse. He is drawn into an investigation of what appears to be a simple murder. I had one problem with the book. It has nothing to do with the plot, so no spoilers are involved, but one of the characters has a name that is virtually identical (the spelling varies only slightly) to the name of a famous sports figure. There really doesn't seem to be any reason for it, and I found it to be a minor distraction. Still, I really liked the story. The Avid Angler is free at Smashwords, Amazon, and probably most other retailers. Next up, White Elephant by Nora Barker, second in the Dr. Christmas Connery Cozy Mysteries. I have the full series from a previous Smashwords sale -- they are not enrolled in the current Smashwords sale. Last edited by cromag; 07-08-2016 at 01:46 AM. |
