hm. can you think of a way to warn me if i fire up *no* burners ? that would help me a lot. (there is still the problem of firing up the correct one, and then forgetting about it though. )

Yes, actually, that was the 1st alarm, the second, which happened right after, was the smoke alarm ....

I was looking at a car today that if the engine catches on fire, some plastic plugs melt and drops a blanket-like thing drops down over it.

I learnt yesterday that baking parchment isn't a good substitute for tin foil when you're using the grill. I'd offer karma for anyone guessing how I discovered that, but I think it's far too obvious

I've done the wrong-burner thing more often than I care to relate. I'd probably still do it frequently, but I heat water for tea in the microwave now (it seems to be the most efficient way, surprisingly.)

I've had that feeling all day like someone has just kicked me in the solar plexus, but it seems to be getting better. I got a nice book to read (paper-- this one's not available as an ebook, even in the UK) and a few little creative projects to fiddle with.

Which reminds me! I need to finish uploading and configuring the Squirrel section of the store.

Hope you feel better!

One time I turned on the stove, and about ten minutes later I smelled something funny. I realized that the wrong burner was on, and my glass ashtray was on it. Stupid me, I was washing my hands at the time and went to touch the ashtray to see if it was hot (after I turned off the burner). It instantly cracked and continued to do so for the next half hour.

I want one of those!! Since we can't have a proper gas stove, that is the next best thing. Will have to wait a few years for the kitchen appliances to start breaking down before we replace them all; they all have to be matching of course. By that time, they will probably have a new kinda stove that can detect if anything is in the pot before it cranks on the heat.

More efficient than a kettle? (an electric one, not a hob-one)

I'll have to have a look, but I had a feeling that the more expensive inductions have some kind of safety cutoff for such things (or, at least, it turns off if there is nothing in the pot for a certain period of time, for instance, if you boil a pot of water dry)?

Cheers,
Marc (cooking with gas)

I'm not sure. I know the electric kettles are very quick, and the heat is pretty much confined to the kettle interior. They might be slightly more efficient than the microwave. (I should go look this up, but I'm feeling lazy. Maybe someone else can find us a reference?)

You people are spoiled with you gas, electric & magnetic. Growing up we just put another stick of wood in the stove.

Neko, sorry to hear about you loss of sleep. I understand about awaking in the night & not being able to get back to sleep. Fortunately mine are not from panic attacks except that one time I dreamed that the hogs were after me.

Good luck with your feedback routine. I've been thinking about looking into that myself. What SW do you have?
