Ciao Annalisa,

At the moment I am using the auto power off instead of keeping the device in standby. But I really don't like to do that. Mainly because I want to have the book ready as soon as I open it... don't want to wait for a minute for the device to load the O.S..
Maybe I am a bit exagerating but I expect this from a 400Euro device. I am still very disappointed but I hope that an update of the firmware will fix this bug.
It would be nice to have some bug tracking tool. Meanwhile I am going to send a mail to the only available email address of Onyx... that is for sales

Thanks for the info.
You described exactly what happens... it's enough to keep it 1 night in standby to have it stuck. But as you said this is happening from time to time.

Hello,

I received my Onyx Boox N96 yesterday. Its a built-in-light model. So far am trying it as I am new to Onyx devices.
What i have noticed so far is that it takes more time to respond to my commands if compared to the kindle devices.
And, guys, i have a problem. It comes with Pico TTS but when i am trying to install the required voice data it says: " no results found'. I tried both: settings of the device and android settings. It's all the same.
Now I dont really need Pico TTS but what could it mean? Does it mean the device was in use and was rooted before? (I must add it came to me unsealed and I am contacting the seller about it as I was clearly paying for a new, sealed device).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I have the same issue.
I didn't investigate it because I don't need TTS at the moment but I am curious too if there is a way on how to fix this.

To be honest I don't think that the reason is because the device was rooted.. or at least I hope... thinking about it I have to admit that also my device came in a box that was clearly already opened before. From where did you buy?

Hi, UncleZ

It was purchased from ebay. The seller is micmi-com. The box was opened because it was missing the film cover. I have already contacted the seller regarding this. It was a gift for me and I am really upset about the situation.
Pico TTS is not critical for me either. I just want to know what I am dealing with. If it was rooted that means there is no warranty, right?

Ok, so if it was open just to add screen protector is fine I think.

Regarding the root... you can check if yours is rooted with an application like "root checker", if it works. I will try to use it today evening from home just to confirm it's working on our device.

BTW, root procedure is generally reversible and in such cases I have never heard that warranty was refused Also when keeping root where it is some companies still grant warranty, even if in theory rooting equals to void warranty.

Hi, UncleZ

Thanks for clarification.

There must be some misunderstanding because of my english, sorry for that.
The seller didn't add any screen protector. The box containing the reader was not film encased which proves that the box was opened and implies the device was used before.
Regarding the rooting and warranty it was something I read in the users manual. I might be wrong as well.

Regarding rooting, it depends on the vendor, but sometimes they may refuse warranty on the basis of rooting (not sure what onyx's or ereader-store's stance is). In practice, unless you bork things up really bad, it is normally possible to get rid of root, of only by flashing a clean factory image. Some vendors have a warranty bit that's set if you do modifications like rooting (Samsung), but I don't think that onyx does. (Unless someone knows differently)

Thanks, franzli

So far I can't install Pico TTS and, turns out, the built in dictionary is also not working. Ok, I agree, there are lots of alternatives available on the PlayMarket, but I really don't understand why a brand new device doesn't have at least some vital apps installed? Why can't I get it out of the box and enjoy using it instead of going online and trying to solve the issues?
By the way, OnyxNeoReader also leaves a lot to be desired. Could you suggest a good PDF reader for Onyx devices?

Thanks a lot for your help

I mostly use ezpdf on my android devices, also on my T68+. There should be a trial version on the play store.
The onyx reader is better optimized for e-ink though, so sometimes i prefer it, especially if I want to scroll around on one page as it keeps the picture intact while scrolling.

Hello dear fellows!

I have been reading this forum for a half a year, but has not left a single post yet. I was waiting for any video review of Onyx N96ML and noone has uploaded it. I am a female student and now I am taking course in Polish language. I have digital copies of textbooks(only three) and need to know whether this device can cope with them. Could you tell me please, who already has this model, will I be able to write in words on every page, and then save it and send it to my lecturer.

Hello, Artdeco

First of all i must say the pdf you provided is not of a good quality. Looks very dim even though i played with contrast settings and light. Also I would crop the vertical margins before uploading it on the device. This would make it bigger and easier to fill in the requred fields. It was really difficult to fit the writing into such a narrow field. With this particular file i would better print it out and do all the manipulations required with the printed file.

colorama, thank you so much for testing this pdf for me! Apart from cropping, onyx seems a decent device for taking notes.
Now I am completely sure it will satisfy my needs.

Hi UncleZeno, I second the motion regarding the battery drain. I have the book cover and my device is not rooted. If I’m not mistaken after a day the battery is gone. I will test your theory regarding the cover. My Nook Simple Touch with & without glowlight definitely last for days/weeks turned on and on standby. However the Nook does not have a magnetic cover. If it is the cover it’s a shame because I like the toughness of the cover and it does protect the screen. Is there a tough screen cover without the magnets/an alternative??

Truth be known I actually don’t use my Onyx N96ML that much. I guess I just don’t have a lot of time on my hands to read LOL. Since I use my phone/tablets often sometimes I get annoyed by the slow response time of the Onyx when I navigate and there have been times the Onyx froze on me so I would have to reboot it.

My pleasure

But bear in mind you can make notes in PDF files only. For other formats you will only be able make highlights and bookmarks. Also there is an inbuilt app OnyxScribbler that allows you to create notes using the stylus.
It is a bit slow if compared to kindle devices, and that was really a shocking discovery but you get used to it. Am glad that I went for a front light model, it really makes a difference in your reading experience. There were people complaining about the need of always using the stylus. For me I am absolutely fine with it, I'd even say I enjoy using it ))).
Am planning on installing some additional apps later on. Don't really like OnyxNeoReader for sometimes its not responding correspondingly, but Franzli said it proves to be useful too.
