part time work you are lucky if you get more than 7 days Unpaid.

for full time, most ive heard of start now at 1-2 weeks a year, with 5 days paid sick or less.

Why only 3! I get 5 weeks and usually take a bit over 4 every year (and always wanting more!) I generally try to take that last week with me to the new year as you never know what happens at the end of the year. You might need those last few days off anway...

I get 10 paid holiday days a year at work, pretty much matching what vivaldirules said.

A lot of people in the US are aware how pathetic their workyear is compared to much of Europe--longer hours, less vacations, less sick leave, less health care.

True. But can you tell me how our taxes compare to Europe? Those perks can't be free.

I get about 2/3 on my bank account from what I earn, the rest goes to taxes and other things.

(I believe tax is 37%)

At 21 hrs on the job, I get 3 wks vacation and 2 wks sick, which acccrue, plus 3 "personal holiday" days that expire every year on June 30. I use all of that time for fun!

Which explains why I don't have any paid sick time for all of these days I've missed out lately. But we've had a lot of good vacations, and it's well worth missing a few days of pay.

Do firms in the US offer any form of paid maternity/parental leave?

According to Wikipedia "Five countries in the world do not offer some form of paid parental leave - Australia, the United States, Liberia, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea."
I'm wondering if it's available from employers if not from the state.

Its available thru some employers, not all. I received 6 weeks but that was 35 yrs ago.
My daughter, as a teacher, received 0. Nada. Her union sucks.

Since I'm self-employed, I get exactly zero holidays and zero vacation each year. Every day is the same to me. While those around me had "Christmas" this year, I had "Thursday."

Back when I was someone's employee, as I recall I got two weeks of vacation, two weeks of sick time, and as much "comp" time as I felt like earning. (If the notion of "comp" time is not of common knowledge, say someone (like me) worked a holiday (which I always did). I would then get time and a half for that day later.

Now ... every day is just a mix of work, caring for the animals, helping my neighbors, cleaning house, and projects. Same thing ... day in and day out.
