I really like this slate as it's taking shape; I'm on board with all the nominations this far. I think my vote will mostly reflect trying for a book that will pull people into the discussion.

Come on, folks, how about just a little love for Death in the Dordogne, aka Bruno Chief of Police. While I agree, it's at a difficult price point, it IS available from most libraries via Overdrive, and there's a really well done Audible version for those who prefer listening to a book instead of, or in addition to, reading. We only need one more second and we can add it to the already interesting list of books for this month.

And, while I don't think we have time to get enough votes for it, I'd like to nominate Midnight Riot (aka, Rivers of London), the first of the PC Peter Grant/Rivers of London series from Ben Aaronovitch. This book completely took me by surprise and I was delighted in it, and all the following books in the series. The books are short (Midnight Riot is 322 pages), the characters are interesting, and the writing is witty and funny. Midnight Riot is a modern London police procedural whose main character is a black PC (police constable). Oh, and then there's the fantasy part, of course.

I know this is late in the process, and I apologize -- life and work have been more than a bit rough this month. And if we can't get enough nominations to get this in for a perfect summer read, then I'll be re-nominating in December for Fantasy month. But really, even though you might not think you like fantasy, I think you'll like this book. PC Peter Grant is just a great character, and if you want to try the Audible version, you'll quickly understand why I think Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is one of my all time favourite readers, even though he's done so few books outside of this series. Plus the books are of reasonable length for us to read, at a reasonable price point, and available via Overdrive libraries in both ebook and audio formats.

I second the nomination. I discovered that it is available via Overdrive from my library. I'm part way through and it's a lovely summer read. Completely unexpected. Thanks for the tip, Charlie.

I read Midnight Riot/Rivers of London a couple weeks ago and agree that it is a fantastic story. I immediately placed a hold for book 2 at my library.

Unfortunately I don't have any nominations left.

You're welcome. That's the best part of a book club like this, with a diverse group of people. Finding books you wouldn't otherwise find, and helping others find some of yours. And then having a chance to talk about them and gain insights you wouldn't have otherwise had.

Well, that's pretty much my fault for waiting so late. But we'll get another chance in December.

Given that it was also nominated in February it may be for the best. I would definitely second it in December if you nominate it then.
