I got an email about an Amazon credit of approximately $86 US, and I'm more than happy to accept it. Curiously, the credit is applied rather haphazardly to my purchases. Some purchases have no credit applied against them, and some do but only partially.

I've gotten credits from Amazon, B&N and Kobo in the last 2 days. The Amazon ones I'll use to get eBooks, but I stopped buying books from B&N and Kobo when they started limiting/removing the download options. According to the B&N email I can use the credits in the store for anything, so, ok....let's see what the local store has in the way of Game of Thrones dvds. But Kobo is a problem if I can't download anything I buy to my pc, and $28 in credits is a bit too large for me to comfortably ignore.

Why wouldn't you be able to download your Kobo purchases to a PC? Magazine's are app only AFAIK (and probably comics?), but regular eBooks still have a download option just like they always have. There was a brief period where some books that were ePub3 couldn't be downloaded (at least not without Kobo's desktop software), but that didn't last long.

It took me a little bit to figure out the new way to download from Kobo's site. From your library click on the three dots and choose export. It's not very obvious.

In any case, the only books that should be missing the export option are those that need the apps to display properly. If you have books that don't fit that category and can't be exported, you should complain to Kobo. |

I had to jump through hoops to spend my credit at B&N. It was only $1.57. I had to update my address book and then three different places update it there because the change didn't take. It then wanted a new credit card with the new address. It took my prepaid even though it doesn't work anymore.
I then had to download Nook for PC which I had to Google for seeing B&N does not make it obvious where to get it. Once that was done I was able to download my book from the program and seeing it was drm free throw it in Calibre for safe keeping. I have 58 cents left. I guess they can keep it. lol. I'm quite comfortable buying books from Kobo once again (I have no Kobo device, nor use any Kobo apps). Things were touch and go there for a while (mostly with many DRM-Free EPUB3s being mistakenly presented as kepub-only). But most of those kinks have been worked out. I can't remember the last book I wasn't able to download/sideload (DRM-Free or not).
I diligently check for app-only books before purchasing (using the method davidfor described), but I haven't run into one in a long, long time. I suspect the easily reflowable, text-centric novels that I favor just aren't likely candidates for app-only formats. They're quite easy to avoid in the offchance I DO encounter one. |
