ETA: Oh, sorry, I meant to say to you, WT, that that occasionally happens to me. If it happens to you again: do you have receding gums, or perhaps pockets near a bridge? I have this one spot, where the gum isn't uber-snug up against the tooth. I have to water-pik it (and under my bridge) religiously, or a microscopic bit of food or liquid something will get caught in there, that doesn't come out with brushing, and then it will form an equally microscopic blister--that hurts like an abscess. If you water pik religiously, it keeps the particles out of there, OR, at the least, it will "pop" the wee blister, providing wonderful relief. <snip>
I don't have a waterpic, but perhaps I should get one. I always use one of those cheap $5.00 electric toothbrushes sold at the department stores.

But I have crap English teeth. I've always heard the English, from whom I'm descended, have the worst teeth.

Dad was Irish. Mom was a transplanted Brit. I think I got it from both sides.

I had several root canals as a preface to getting crowns. They weren't what I'd do for fun, but they weren't major bothers either. I didn't require being put to sleep. Enough Novocaine did the job. (I did talk funny for a bit as part of the lips and tongue were paralyzed. I was put in mind of an old Bloom County cartoon strip where smarmy lawyer Steve Dallas has dental work done, just before an important date. The local anesthetic is powerful enough to have him drooling with his tongue hanging out of his mouth and it won't wear off till the following day...)

It sounds to me that you are noise sensitive. My husband is like this. He gets really irritated at noise including my tone or volume. He gets upset if I walk too heavy or if the neighbors makes noise. Sometimes he so sensitive it makes him agitated to hear anything out of normal routine. I just leave him alone and go read.

It's 4am and I'm wide awake. We just had an hour long thunderstorm pass. Even with earplugs in I could hear it raining. Lightning struck the nearby church tower once, not only did you hear it but you could also feel it. Unfortunately it hasn't cooled down much, it's still warm and sticky.

More thunderstorms are predicted for later today. But first I'll try to get a couple of hours of sleep in.

The wear quality of teeth has little to no genetic component, it's all to do with diet (when young and the teeth are developing) and oral hygiene.

And British teeth (in terms of function) are among the best in the world. Due to NHS dentistry being free for children.

What we don't have is as much cosmetic dentistry as rich Americans. Poor Americans in general have much worse teeth.

You know...I find that very hard to believe. Not disbelieving you; just...when I view my own life, that seems bizarre. My mother had gorgeous teeth as a teen. Her dentist convinced my grandmother that she needed braces, and from that point forward it was all downhill. Both her parents had their own teeth upon their own demises.

All we kids drank milk and ate calcium-rich foods like crazy. We never ate candy or dessert; no soda in the house. My spouse and I aren't crap food eaters. Again, no candy, no desserts; neither of us like soda. I don't see how I could have done better, diet-wise. And as I mentioned previously, my oral hygiene routine, per my dentists and dental hygienists, seems to be well above average. And still--crappy teeth, relative to many others. Ditto my two siblings. That's frustrating.

I suspect that's more recently taken? The information about British dentistry and functioning teeth? Is that right?

OK, I confess I was only reasoning from my own experience (My first five years were spent in an area with naturally soft water. My milk teeth were terrible. Then we moved to an area with naturally hard water. My adult teeth are OK -- One crown, filled molars, none lost.)

[EDIT: And a brief bit of research (which I should have done before posting!) shows that there is some heritability in tooth decay - the surface structure of the teeth does affect how susceptible they are to decay, and that structure is heritable. Apologies!]

A study last year. I suspect that the 'common knowledge' is from higher rates of cosmetic dentistry among richer Americans. Although more UK people (who can afford it) are now having 'work done'.

PHEW! I was sitting here wondering..what the hell could I have done differently? I'm not saying that we have monastic eating habits, but seriously, I can count on one hand the number of times we eat so-called "fast food" each year, and I'm including take-out pizza in that. And on both hands, total, in the last 20 years. We really aren't fond of it. Mr. Hitch had a sweet tooth (before his cardiac--those "stories" around the internet, about taste buds changing? All damn true.) for ages, yes--but basically, it's your simpler 3-5 squares a day around here, replete with dark green veggies, homemade granola, quinoa before regular folks could pronounce it, and all that. Not because Martha Stewart lives here, by any means, or that we have that New Age thing going on. It's just our taste buds.

It's a damn good thing, too. Excellent for kids to get a good start. Now...how can we get them to have super teeth, AND a love of reading? :-)

Normally you'd take a bite, chew, and swallow. Or, you take something to drink and swallow. After putting food into his mouth he chews... and chews... and chews.... end-less-ly-and-forever with a "much, munch, munch" sound. Chewing for a minute or so is no exception. When drinking, he goes like: "slrrrp, swallow, slrrrp, swallow, slrrrp, swallow, slrrrp, swallow, slrrrp, swallow", with tiny sips of half a mili-liter. He can easily keep that up for several minutes without even putting down his cup (!).

It's a wonder I haven't shot him yet.

Sound, or even noise, isn't even the problem. I actually like unidentified noise in the background; motor hum, computer fans, wind, or even music if instrumental. No problem. What I don't like is the urge some people have to constantly do things loudly while there is no reason for that.

Why does putting down a cup need to sound like a gun shot? Why should you slam a door shut, instead of just putting the handle down and then shutting it normally? Why do you have to sit down so extremely boorishly that you slam into your desk, rocking all the desks (and monitors) that are adjacent to it?

I don't expect men (or women) to be as dainty as a princess in a Disney story, but there's no reason for moving around and acting as if you're a 7.5 foot, 400 pound caveman that crushes everything that's not solid granite and can only communicate by bellowing as loudly as possible.

Well, some of us are ADHD and don't realize what we are doing because that is simply how our body/mind works. I normally have some body part in motion and my leg wiggling can be problematic. I enjoy bouncing a ball between my hands but I only do that when I am alone in my office. The people who share an office with me know that they can say "You are shaking the desk" or "Stop with the ball" or whatever else it is that I am doing and I will stop. I also cannot control the loudness of my sneeze and I am a loud sneezer.

I walk quickly and push through things fast so I slam doors more then I should. I try and remember not to but when I am day dreaming or lost in thought I forget. I day dream and get lost in a thought a fair amount.

I am not trying to drive you crazy, I just don't want to take a medication that has the effect of turning me into a freaking zombie so that you don't have to occasionally ask me to stop wiggling the desk or playing with my ball. Try approaching the noisy person and asking them politely to try and be less noisy, it can be very effective when done politely and without a laundry list of complaints.

And no, it is not an excuse. The third Doctor who diagnosed me flat out told me at our first appointment that she believes ADHD is massively over diagnosed and that I am probably not ADHD. After two hours of diagnostic testing and conversation she diagnosed me with ADHD. She actually told me that she made the diagnose in the first 10 minutes after meeting me but needed to complete to appropriate procedure because that is what you do. We worked on behavior modification and my responses to people in a variety of situations. It helped a ton.

So be polite but say something. It might be that the person does not realize that they are loud. It might be that there is an explanation. It might be that the person is a boor and nothing will change. You won't know until you try.

If it was only one... there are several. I refuse to believe that half of the company or so has ADHD. I, and others, have tried hinting, asking, or blatantly ordering people to behave more normally. It doesn't work. A loud sneeze? OK. Yawning like a fracking moose, so that it sounds like AAooooAAAOEOEEEeeeaaaaWAAAA!!!, and can be heard three offices over? Why add a shout to a yawn? That's just ridiculous.

These people know. They have been asked to behave more normally on several occasions. One of them just does it on purpose. I'm 100% sure of that.

Then talk to HR, if there is an HR. If there isn't their manager should get involved. If they are disruptive and causing problems in the workplace with their behavior then it should be addressed.

[geek rant] WHY IN THE FREAKING WORLD would you create multiple cross-loops to switches in your server room???? The IDIOT that created this mess should have to clean it up! I've lost TWO DAYS of a limited trip trying to sort through this mess. With mislabeled ports, machines no longer in the rack they're documented to, and a total networking MESS. And I wasn't even supposed to have to deal with networking at all! [/geek rant]
