And what firmware version is it running now? Do you have a TTL serial port adapter, and tools to remove the back cover?

How easy it is depends entirely on your starting conditions and experience level (including soldering skills and/or ingenuity). And as knc1 said, "easy" is a relative term.

There is no known way besides connecting to the serial port inside, at this time. Amazon calls what you want to do a "downgrade attack", and they have added code to the firmware to prevent that via non-invasive mechanisms. It would take discovering a vulnerability (i.e. software "mistake") to exploit, before we can downgrade firmware without a serial port connection. Not impossible, but not easy either.

When I jailbroke my PW1 immediately after I got it (being one of the first people to get one), NiLuJe called it "not a 0-day, more like a -150 day". That was clearly a mistake from lab126, because it exploited a simple "tarbomb" vulnerability they had already fixed in the K5 firmware multiple versions earlier.

Though lately, they have been getting really secure, which makes it look like they might have an aspie programmer (i.e. technology addict) on their staff at lab126.

So how where you expecting to use the serial port adapter if you knew in advance you wouldn't open the Kindle?

Is the device jailbroken?
If so, then you should be able to downgrade the 'main' system while running from the 'diags' system.

If not, then:
Choice one: Leave it alone and learn to love it.
Choice two: Change your mind about peeling the bezel off and using that serial port adapter.

Jailbreak is one of those starting conditions that matter here. And rescue pack (i.e. diags usbnet). And a little linux shell experience. Otherwise wait and see.

We never got a straight answer about whether this kindle has jailbreak, or any of those other questions. The only straight answer was to express no desire to open the kindle.
