Get a Different Take on Renaissance's Borgias Family, in this BIG, $1.99 Kindle Mobi.
The ratings on this book are a little less than I like for one that I post. But, the book is currently the #1 seller in three categories in the Kindle store! Too, it's a huge 512 pages long. Add to that the fact that it is marked down 85% from the digital list price, and I've found myself a must-post.
The Borgias: The Hidden History. By G.J. Meyer. Rated 4.2 stars, from 175 reviews, at Amazon at the present moment. Print list price $18.00; digital list price $12.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Bantam, publisher. 512 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Borgias-Hidde.../dp/B009MYAUYG. Book Description The startling truth behind one of the most notorious dynasties in history is revealed in a remarkable new account by the acclaimed author of The Tudors and A World Undone. Sweeping aside the gossip, slander, and distortion that have shrouded the Borgias for centuries, G. J. Meyer offers an unprecedented portrait of the infamous Renaissance family and their storied milieu. THE BORGIAS They burst out of obscurity in Spain not only to capture the great prize of the papacy, but to do so twice. Throughout a tumultuous half-century—as popes, statesmen, warriors, lovers, and breathtakingly ambitious political adventurers—they held center stage in the glorious and blood-drenched pageant known to us as the Italian Renaissance, standing at the epicenter of the power games in which Europe’s kings and Italy’s warlords gambled for life-and-death stakes. Five centuries after their fall—a fall even more sudden than their rise to the heights of power—they remain immutable symbols of the depths to which humanity can descend: Rodrigo Borgia, who bought the papal crown and prostituted the Roman Church; Cesare Borgia, who became first a teenage cardinal and then the most treacherous cutthroat of a violent time; Lucrezia Borgia, who was as shockingly immoral as she was beautiful. These have long been stock figures in the dark chronicle of European villainy, their name synonymous with unspeakable evil. But did these Borgias of legend actually exist? Grounding his narrative in exhaustive research and drawing from rarely examined key sources, Meyer brings fascinating new insight to the real people within the age-encrusted myth. Equally illuminating is the light he shines on the brilliant circles in which the Borgias moved and the thrilling era they helped to shape, a time of wars and political convulsions that reverberate to the present day, when Western civilization simultaneously wallowed in appalling brutality and soared to extraordinary heights. Stunning in scope, rich in telling detail, G. J. Meyer’s The Borgias is an indelible work sure to become the new standard on a family and a world that continue to enthrall. The publisher is DK (Dorling Kindersley), a British company. I don't know that I have purchased any of their ebooks, but I have quite a few of their physical books. If the digital books are like the physical books, they are loaded with photographs and other images. The images are very vivid and intense (I've noticed that this is true of the publications of several other British publishers in the last few years). I think that I remember now that ebooks.com typically, if not always, throws in the pdf with whatever other format a customer buys. Thanks for reminding us. Jefferson and Hamilton: The Rivalry That Forged a Nation by John Ferling has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. I've been thinking a bit recently about their two different viewpoints, and so am happy to find a book that gets pretty good reviews that focuses on these two guys.

I had become wary of Encore Books' cookbooks and recipe books (my wariness of those has softened somewhat in the last few months, however). This ebook from Encore Books is not a cookbook or recipe book, however. It is about travel. And it appears to be good quality
It is The Untraveled Traveler: Cuba, by J.R. Stevens. Here's the book description from Amazon: For Americans, travel to Cuba is reopening after more than 50 years, with cruise ships and airlines bring now targeting this fertile island. Visiting Cuba offers a rich set of experiences. From its culture and politics to its rainforests and coral reefs, it’s a beautiful country with an amazing history and wonderful people. In The Untraveled Traveler we attempt to provide information for different types of travelers: the history buff, the nature lover, the adventurer, the beach goer, the partier, and the foodie. We hope that even if you don’t like to travel, you’ll find something interesting or helpful in this guide to Cuba. The book is brand new, having been published on June 13. So there are no reviews or ratings at Amazon or GoodReads yet. However, the author is prolific writer and his other books typically are very highly rated. Anyway, the ebook is free, so you really don't have much to lose but maybe a few minutes, by downloading it and taking a look. Here's the linky to it, at Amazon. Yesterday, the people of Great Britain, by a narrow margin, voted to exit the European Union (you will hear this referred to as "Brexit"). Prime minister David Cameron, a supporter of G.B. being in the EU, promptly resigned. It's been all over the news, etc. Financial markets have been in a roil since. There have been dire warnings of the people of Great Britain (except for perhaps Scottish ones, who are discussing staying in EU) experiencing bad economic times as a result. Free trade advocates are alarmed. All of that prompts the question of whether or not the European Union is a good thing for member countries. With the euro being the common currency, that factors greatly into the discussion, too. I don't know what position the Mises Institute would take. I do know that they are very conservative regarding fiscal matters, maybe even to the point of being libertarian. Many people in the U.S. who would identify themselves as being likeminded would be against free trade; the EU was formed in part to facilitate free trade. I didn't do any (additional) research, fact-checking, etc. on the subjects, touched on above, before making this post, so there may be some minor inaccuracies in what I wrote. But, if so, it is at least close to being accurate. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-24-2016 at 07:24 PM. |
