I just finished reading The Outskirter's Secret, second in the Steerswoman series by Rosemary Kirstein. EXCELLENT book and I'm champing at the bit to get to the next in the series. However, I just downloaded a couple of books from the library which I am now obligated to read before the return dates: The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, as well as Commitment Hour and Vigilant, the 2nd and 3rd books in James Alan Gardner's League of Peoples series. All science fiction, but I'm sure I'll slip a cozy mystery in there to break things up.

Currently reading The Assembler of Parts by Raoul Wientzen.
I am liking it so far... I know I'll be crying by the end of it. |

Just finished "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion. Very good.
Now I am reading the first book in the Inspector Ramsay series. "A Lesson in Dying" by Ann Cleeves. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Started A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness last night, and finished the rest of it in one sitting this morning. A wonderful modern fairy tale that had me totally absorbed, and by the end, very emotional. Dealing as it does with such a difficult subject, it is moving and powerful and beautiful. And you will cry.

Finished "Way of the Pilgrim", by Gordon R. Dickson. Shane Evert is a translator working for the alien Aalaag, who have conquered Earth and regard humans as no more than "cattle" to be exploited. When a single Aalaag warrior could destroy all life on Earth, how can they possibly be defeated?
I first read this book about 30 years ago (in fact I remember exactly when I read it - it was on a plane journey from Manchester, England, to Chicago - my first ever time on a plane!) and I remember being extremely impressed by it. For many years, though, I couldn't remember who the author was, so I was delighted to recently "rediscover" it in Gollancz's "SF Gateway" imprint. I'm happy to say that it stood the test of time, and I enjoyed it as much re-reading it as I did all those years ago. Very, very highly recommended. |

Actually, I would have ordered the book if I lived in the U.S., but I'm currently 'serving time' here in Peru. ![]() |

I really should have started it a long time ago, but aaaghhhhhhhhhh so many choices!!! Still it gives me something to read when I can't use my Kindle. At this rate, I might be set for the better part of a year ![]() |

And I also wound up reading Buck Fever, by Ben Rehder. A mystery set in south Texas involving an honest game warden, a sheriff with a more flexible approach to ethics, a wealthy ex-lobbyist who is very rich and wants to get richer, etc. There is a Library Journal review that compares it to the work of Carl Hiaasen -- I think that may be a bit of an overstatement, but I enjoyed it.
It's the first in a series, and seems to be permanently free at Amazon and other retailers. Right now I'm too busy to decide what I'll be reading next. Probably some short stories from the bottom of my TBR stack. |

Very interesting read, recommended. Next will be the ninth and the last book of the D.A. series by Erle Stanley Gardner, The D.A. Breaks an Egg. |

Wow. That's an over-long book. OK, a world war is a complex thing, but even so!
And the names! The names! Arghhhhh...... Zhaspahr Clyntahn indeed. And they're all like that! I did notice a handy list of characters at the end of the book. If I do get the next one (but it'll have to be at a very good discount) I think I will make a search/replace list for the names. I think calibre can do a search/replace from a correctly formatted file. If not, there'll be a plugin. So why did I finish it? I'm not sure. Time invested in the series already, perhaps? A hope that the books will get past all this detail and on to some of fascinating things that must happen after the war? Sigh. What next I wonder? I shall decide this evening. |
