Back to the glass substrate, I'm beginning to wonder how much manufacturing variations there is in the substrates. These are after all devices made to a price point, and I imagine not all can be perfect, if any are at all.

Following this thought then, how many of these broken substrates that we see are genuinely down to abuse by users? Could it be that some of these substrates were not quite right from the factory and are therefore ticking timebombs that could crack if you look at them wrong?

Supposing the above has some merit to it, I would then argue that unless there are other obvious signs of damage, a broken substrate should be considered as a manufacturing defect and treated accordingly.

Just a few thoughts from me. I will admit that I have never had a broken screen in the eight years I have been reading on eink devices, and I have never treated them with kiddie gloves.

That's the fairly obvious point that certainly the manufacturers don't want to talk about - any industrial process has variation and imperfection. My device looks pristine - no scratches, no marks, no warping, no dints, nothing. It did perhaps receive a bump when in a backpack, but nothing that should render an expensive device useless and irreparable.

All of them... until proven otherwise, it's always due to outside influence. If a line of ebook readers had an inherent weakness it would be a story on one of the many ebook reader review sites.

People are just unwilling to accept it, since the damage can not be seen from the outside, and is not apparent until you turn the device back on / try to flip the page so they don't even remember when something might have applied pressure/torsion/force to the device...

It only seems to happen mainly to either the Aura HD or the H2O, so i believe you raise a valid point regarding those two particular devices.

All of them? highly improbable.

The Kobo Aura 6" is the only one worth buying in my opinion, failing that get a Kindle with a nice flush screen, that's if you like flush screens of course

There have been plenty of reports of screen failures for all Kobo devices, including your beloved Aura. Maybe the Aura HD and Aura H2O are more prone. Having noticeably bigger screens means there is more impact area for external damage, harder to give the screen support to prevent twisting without significantly increasing weight. But, if they are more prone to breakages, it isn't by a very significant amount.

Beloved Aura 6" you got that bit right specifically regarding a broken substrate i haven't read about it happening on this forum to a Aura 6" but even if it has , it is much much more common on the Aura HD and the H2O, so i agree with you maybe they are more prone to this because of the bigger screen.

Believe me, broken substrate for all the Kobo devices have been reported here. Personally, I haven't counted the reports so I don't know which has the most. I don't really think the numbers have been much different for all models. But, recent reports are more for the H2O rather than the older models. I think there is a bit more dissatisfaction expressed for these as the H2O is more expensive and with the waterproofing everyone was probably hoping they would be stronger in other ways.

You can certainly understand why it would put people off buying another one if it does happen to them without any obvious cause like dropping it or heat related, even more so if they have it in a protective case/cover.

My suspicion is that people get more upset about it when the device was more expensive.

I'm having a similar issue w/ mine, I believe. Screen frozen with one image, won't change after all troubleshooting steps, etc. Kept in a case, not treated poorly, no visible damage.

I have a case open with Kobo, but I'm not expecting much. I supplied them with all the requested documents, but since I purchased it on eBay (new, mind you), they are requesting the original receipt from when the EBAY SELLER purchased it, not just when I purchased it. It seems a little crazy to me, and I'm not really very happy about it. I'm not one to let a single bad incident affect my purchasing decisions too much, but if they can't resolve this for me, I doubt I'll buy another Kobo again.

Pic? [Ah... it's hard to tell for this one.]

Quite normal if you buy stuff second hand... quite a lot of companies state that warranty is for original purchaser only and not transferable...

It has some horizontal lines but I think also a vertical line there... most likely still broken, even if it's not as obvious as other cases.

And the warranty starts when it was first purchased, so even if the warranty is transferable, they need that date.
