Let me tell you what happened, so I'm not thought to be as ignorant as it seems. The program had flagged the spelling "entendre" as being incorrect. I was almost sure that I was correct--it is a French word, and I had 3 years of French total in both high school and college. I've forgotten about everything that I learned about the language, but I thought that I did still retain a knowledge of how to spell French words phonetically. But, I went to Dictionary.com's Chrome extension bookmark on my bookmark bar to do a quick check of the spelling anyway, and read this: "entendre[ duhb-uhl ahn-tahn-druh, -tahnd; French doo-blahn-tahn-druh] noun [plural dou·ble en·ten·dres] 1. a double meaning. 2. a word or expression used in a given context so that it can be understood in two ways, especially when one meaning is risqué." Note that the entry word is "entendre," not "double entendre." As usual I skipped over the pronunciation and plural meaning, and went right to the definitions. Definition number "1" says, "a double meaning." Number "2" also indicates that it involves a double meaning. If I had read the pronunciation and noted the plural meaning given by Dictionary.com's Chrome extension, there would have been doubt in my mind about whether or not the definitions were for "entendre." But I didn't do that at the time. So, I assumed that I must have been wrong about what I thought that the definition of "entendre" was! There is a discrepancy between the Dictionary.com extension's entry and the Dictionary.com's website entry. I didn't check the Dictionary.com website earlier, but if I had, I would have seen for the search term "entendre" an entry for "double entendre" instead. After the entry word, I believe that everything may be the same for the Chrome extension version as it is for the Dictionary.com website version. The definitions given on the Dictionary.com website for "double entendre" are correct for "double entendre." I can see now that I will have to be more careful in using the Dictionary.com extension (for Chrome, anyway) from now on. I would advise anyone else who uses it to be careful, too. It looks like this doesn't fit into any of the pre-existing threads, and I'm personally averse to creating new threads. It looks like most of the ebooks in this service are fiction, however, so I've chosen to put this on the General Fiction thread.
It looks like the current trial Scribd promotion is a free 14-day one. For the uninitiated among us, Scribd is one of a couple (I've forgotten the name of the other one) of the major services which allows you to have access to books and audiobooks (audiobooks at least as far as Scribd is concerned, I don't know about the other one(s)). You pay a monthly fee for the privilege. Here are the membership details for Scribd: "3 books and 1 audiobook each month — plus unlimited access to sheet music, documents, and special select titles for $8.99 / month." Scribd states that it "is available on your favorite devices." Here's the webpage to go to to start your free trial. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-19-2016 at 04:09 PM. |

20 Ebooks at Google Play, for Only 99 Cents Each.
Here are about 20 ebooks that are currently 99 cents at Google Play. Find them here, at the Google Play store. It looks like they all are fiction of some variety or another, but there may be a non-fiction book that has snuck in.
If I have time later, I'll try to check the Amazon Kindle prices to see if they are matching any of the prices or whatever (like if there's a publisher promotion going on). There is also a spate of--around 50--ebooks currently $1.99 each, for you spendthrifts out there (ha). Charmed: The War on Witches. By Paul Ruditis. Sails on the Horizon. By Jay Worrall. Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do. By Pearl Cleage. Eye Candy. By R.L. Stine. That Faith, That Love. By Jameliah Ellis. Reluctant Prince. By Dani-Lyn Alexander. Limitless: Out the of the Box. By Robert L. Crane. Bad Glass. By Richard E. Gropp. Murder on the Run. By Medora Sale. The Man Who Murdered God. By John Lawrence Reynok. Hole In One. By Walter Stewart. A Kiss of Fate. By Mary Jo Putney. Hear No Evil: A Loveswept Classic Romance. By Bethany Campbell. Just Give Me a Reason. By Rebecca Rogers Maher. The Billionaire's Secrets. By Meadow Taylor. Falling for Rain. By Meadow Taylor. Ghost Whisperer: The Empty Desk. By Steven Lockley. Flabbergasted (Book #1): A Novel. By Ray Blackston. Howling at the Moon. By Karen Macinerney. Remember the Time. By Annette Reynolds. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-21-2016 at 07:42 PM. |

A trick to be aware of
I found the site:
https://www.forgottenbooks.com/en with lots of free downloads in PDF. This books (all old, out-of-print) are photographed pages. So, none of the junk you see using OCR programs. Here is the trick. Somewhere in the middle of the book you see an alert that the page is BLOCKED from free users. You can subscribe for a MONTHLY fee to unlock the page. I downloaded "Dictionary of Quotations" (1893) and found that alert almost the middle of the book. Ah well, we are now warned. |

The Assembler of Parts is on sale at Amazon.com for $1.99 in the US.
This is a pretty good book similar in form to The Lovely Bones, though with a different story... Anyway, I bought it for the sci-fi sounding title, which it isn't, but I liked it anyway. Sent from my SM-T230NU using Tapatalk Last edited by Dngrsone; 07-01-2016 at 02:21 PM. |

A few historical novel bargains for $1.99 each, available in the US and Canada and eligible for the 4x bonus super points holiday promotion at Kobo US, and should be price-matched in the usual other stores.
Fields of Glory & Blood on the Sand, #1-2 in Michael Jecks' (SYKM, Wikipedia) Hundred Years' Wars historical adventure trilogy out from Simon & Schuster UK, these installments set in 1346. Jecks is a popular historical mystery writer who's known for doing his research (I've read one of his post-Crusades mysteries which I'd gotten from a previous sale and was favourably impressed; he also included some nice historical notes in with the story). Homeland by Barbara Hambly (ISFDB, SYKM, Wikipedia), a standalone part-epistolary novel from Random House's Bantam imprint about the friendship between two women caught up on different sides of the US Civil War, keeping each other sane by discussing Life, the Universe, and Everything as the war rages on around them. Hambly is one of my favourite authors, so I already own this in hardcover. While IMHO it's not the best of her straight historicals, it's still a pretty decent story which is well worth $2 to try if you happen to have enjoyed her other award-nominated historical fiction or her popular Benjamin January historical mysteries or even her fantasy and are interested in the premise.
