Thank you, Alan. It is nice that you try to distract us from the real issue at hand by posting all these nice pictures. It doesn't hide the obvious - Jim Butcher is slacking again. We are into june already and there is not even rumors on when Peace Talks is going to be finished? So that it will be ready for purchase some three months later? Come on. Are we even going to see a christmas release date for 2016?

Cool What I've been reading while waiting for a new Jim Butcher book.

Since I last posted about what I've been reading while waiting I finished reading Burned as well as completing the 12 books following Burned in the above cover graphic and I've read 26% (in the middle of chapter 22) of Harry Potter and the methods of rationality (fanfic) and just started reading (2%) The Black Echo (Harry Bosch Universe #1) by Michael Connelly (liking it so far). I'd recommend any of the above to anybody that is interested by one or more of them.

Ducky's observations are spot right on as you can see by all that I've been reading (and I'm in a reading slump) between Butcher book releases.

Nice! I envy you. I've only had time to read one book this year.... I feel like I'm slowly, but surely starving to death from a lack of reading time.

The JB Turner books look interesting (I'd not heard of him before so just looked him up). What did you think of them?

I loved the Harry Bosch books. I've read all of them now though so looking for something else.

I quite enjoyed Harry Bosch as well, although after about the eighth or so, I started to find them a little too formulaic. I loved Black Echo though.

. . . and there's 19 Harry Bosch books with a 20th due out in November, that's more than The Dresden Files 15 books out with the 16th due out who-knows-when?!

I'm an Amazon member and just finished binge-watching the existing 2 seasons (20 episodes) of Amazon Studios' series Bosch, so I've not gotten any further (12%) in my reading of The Black Echo (Harry Bosch #1). I recommend this series highly. Now back to the book series!

How do the two compare?

Can you enjoy one medium without having tried the other?

I haven't checked out the book, but thought I look into the first episode. Turned out my morning was consumed by 4 episodes. Would have probably watched more if there wasn't other housework to do. If the book is as hard to put down as the tv show, it promises to be a good read.

I haven't read enough of even the first book of the series to be able to answer that. . .

. . . But my guess is that it won't be a problem. Connelly has said this:
Quote:
According to Connelly, "a fair amount of changes" were made "to the world of Harry Bosch" "in making the shift from page to screen." In the series, Harry "is 47 years old and a veteran of the first Gulf War in 1991," when he was a member of a Special Forces team clearing tunnels, but "he has now been a police officer for twenty years, with a one-year exception when he re-upped with the Army after 9/11, as many LAPD officers did. He came back to the force after serving in Afghanistan and again encountering tunnel warfare
. . . which doesn't answer the question either but I personally feel that watching the Amazon series won't interfere with ones enjoyment of the book series.

There, now I feel better.

To be fair, with non-fantasy/non-sf it is a little bit easier to have a book and tv show that won't interfere with each other. In the show Harry says that The Black Echo is loosely based on his cases. Well, it is a movie in the show and not a book. I believe that to be true - so that the cases don't give away spoilers except for maybe interactions or relationships.

As on the other hand The Dresden Files has a much bigger problem getting it right. Loosely based in fantasy can screw things up unfavorably - the magic feels different, the monsters feel different (only the same in name). Not saying the show is really bad as far as tv show goes, but it is lacking somewhat when compared how the books feel.

Amazon's Bosch is executed very well - from script to choice of actors to production. Now don't get me wrong, I have no clue if the actors are any famous, but I don't really care as long as their acting is good. To my eyes it is. Even cuts from one scene to another are technically done nice - for example audio precedes visual at times (e.g. while you see them walking towards the house already hear the knock on door, cut to inside of house where they get invited in through opening door). At the end of each episode you can be pretty sure to expect a strong cliffhanger.
