For any normal teenage boy, having two and a half younger sisters would be enough to deal with. But Simwan Deavy’s life isn’t normal. His family is non-Ord—short for “non-Ordinary”—which means that at school, he and his sisters learn hexing and enchanting along with history and math. It also means they have a ghost for an uncle and a cat who talks. Still, everything is going well for Simwan—until a bottle of Truth is stolen from the local pharmacy. Now the Deavys’ favorite woods are under threat from development; their mother, whose life depends on the Truth, is growing weaker; and the world as they know it might never be the same.

With the help of their cat, Pithfwid, the Deavys track the loathsome, horrible Crub to his lair in New York City. But the Crub has laid traps, turning a dangerous city into a deadly one. To succeed at their mission, the Deavys will have to stick together—or the Truth may be lost forever.

I thought I was in topic. My English may not always be clear, but my point was that the reporting of deals is sometimes hard to interpret because the deals are not visible or accessible to all readers. It seemed to me that clarifying the status of those deals, or learning how one can benefit from them if there is a difficulty would be of interest to many readers of the forum.

I am also under the impression that experts on this topic are to be found on this thread. However, I am not sure the answers given are all correct. Is there a way of pursuing the discussion elsewhere while quoting this thread (though I would prefer completing it here).

The short story collection The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria, by Carlos Hernandez, is 99¢ at several US etailers at the moment. Amazon US BN Kobo (likely others, didn't check)

I haven't read Hernandez but I've seen positive buzz for the collection, so I'm picking it up.

Assimilation is founded on surrender and being broken; this collection of short stories features people who have assimilated, but are actively trying to reclaim their lives. There is a concert pianist who defies death by uploading his soul into his piano. There is the person who draws his mother’s ghost out of the bullet hole in the wall near where she was executed. Another character has a horn growing out of the center of his forehead—punishment for an affair. But he is too weak to end it, too much in love to be moral. Another story recounts a panda breeder looking for tips. And then there’s a border patrol agent trying to figure out how to process undocumented visitors from another galaxy. Poignant by way of funny, and philosophical by way of grotesque, Hernandez’s stories are prayers for self-sovereignty.

In addition to a detailed plot synopsis, full cast and credit listings, and an overview of the critical reception of each film, Warren delivers richly informative assessments of the films and a wealth of insights and anecdotes about their making. The book contains more than 270 photographs (many rare, some in color), has seven useful appendices, and concludes with an enormous index.

How does one read the free and discounted ebooks when you own the print edition? I'm not sure it's worth it to me if you can only read them on the shelfie IOS/Android app

I just tried it out on 8 random books I had lying around - one had an audio book version available to buy but no ebook, one had a free ebook version (yay!) and the rest had nothing. Once it's recognised the book and you submit a picture of your name on the copyright page it then emails you download links to grab the book in epub and mobi formats for use in Shelfie or any other reading app or physical device.

I may be paranoid (okay, I AM paranoid), but the site being rather coy about what books are eligible along with the permissions the Android app wants just screams "We're going to data-mine the hell out of all the lovely information on your phone and maybe let you have a few token books free." Also pretty much none of the written reviews on Google Play look real, and all of those are four and five star reviews. Despite the fakes, it still only manages a 3.6 star rating.

So yeah, I'll pass.
